You will have a Level 5 or above qualification (or equivalent) from a recognised provider or professional training course relevant to specific learning differences/difficulties, together with membership of a relevant professional body such as PASSHE, Patoss or the Dyslexia Guild.
You will have sound knowledge of specific learning differences and their manifestations within a Higher Education setting, alongside experience of delivering individual tuition and monitoring and evaluating learning outcomes. You will be confident interpreting diagnostic reports and other relevant assessments and using this information to design and deliver tailored interventions.
You will have strong knowledge of study skills strategies appropriate to Higher Education and experience of using assistive technology and specialist software to support students with specific learning differences. You will be able to adapt your approach to work effectively with students with a wide range of disabilities and understand barriers from the student's perspective.
You will be an excellent communicator, with the ability to build positive relationships, deliver presentations and workshops to a range of audiences, and work collaboratively with colleagues. You will be organised and able to manage your own workload, maintaining accurate records and meeting deadlines.
Most importantly, you will demonstrate a commitment to inclusive practice and the social model of disability, with the patience, empathy and active listening skills needed to understand individual student needs and tailor your approach accordingly.
As a Specialist Study Skills Tutor, you will provide specialist study skills support to students with specific learning differences and/or neurodivergence, helping them to develop strategies that enable them to engage confidently and effectively with their learning.
You will deliver tailored one-to-one and group sessions, using information from diagnostic assessments, Educational Psychologist reports and other relevant professional reports to understand each student's needs and develop individual learning plans. You will work collaboratively with students to identify and overcome study-related barriers, monitor learning outcomes and evaluate the effectiveness of your support.
You will also contribute to the wider Specific Learning Differences provision at UCL, including developing resources, delivering workshops and supporting the team to meet relevant Department for Education requirements and quality standards. You will maintain accurate student records and tutorial documentation, work closely with colleagues across Disability, Mental Health & Neurodiversity Support Services and contribute to the ongoing development of the service.
This is a varied role where you will combine specialist knowledge with a student-centred approach, using your expertise to help create an inclusive learning environment for students across UCL.
Please note, this role is offered on a fixed-term contract /secondment basis for 12-months in the first instance. This is an internal recruitment advert, available to eligible UCL workers. Hybrid working is available with currently a minimum of 2-days per week onsite (subject to change).
