The role

Are you a confident and compassionate communicator who is passionate about making a positive difference to people's lives? Sheffield City Council is looking for a motivated Engagement and Development Officer to join the Housing Energy Efficiency Team, build positive relationships with council tenants and help deliver innovative Solar PV pilots across the city.

This is an exciting time to join the Housing Energy Efficiency Team as we prepare to deliver a series of Solar PV projects across the city. You will have the opportunity to help shape our approach to tenant engagement, bring your own ideas and make a visible contribution to an innovative programme. We are looking for someone who is enthusiastic, self-motivated and enjoys working directly with council tenants.

The Housing Energy Efficiency Team at Sheffield City Council improves the energy performance of private, social and council-owned homes. Our work helps to lower household energy bills, tackle fuel poverty and support the city's Net Zero ambitions. This role will be pivotal to the successful delivery of innovative energy efficiency measures in council homes across Sheffield.

What you'll do

As an Engagement and Development Officer, you will work with the Project Manager and wider Housing Energy Efficiency Team to promote energy efficiency works and provide council tenants with clear, accessible and reassuring information.

The role will focus on supporting Sheffield City Council's Solar PV pilots and working closely with tenants before, during and after installation. You will visit tenants in their homes, explain Solar PV and other energy efficiency technologies in straightforward, accessible language, answer questions and help people understand what the works will involve and how to use the technology confidently. Prior experience is not essential, but you must be willing to develop your technical knowledge and communicate it clearly and sensitively.

What are we looking for?

The ideal candidate will be confident working independently and comfortable speaking with people from a wide range of backgrounds. You will build trust and rapport with tenants, listen to their questions or concerns and adapt your communication style so that information is clear and inclusive. You will also develop effective working relationships with colleagues and external partners.

You will develop and deliver a tenant liaison strategy for the Solar PV pilots. This will involve working closely with colleagues in the Housing Energy Efficiency Team and teams across the Council, coordinating with installers and other external stakeholders, and supporting tenant engagement events. You will share information, resolve issues collaboratively and help ensure tenants receive a consistent and positive experience.

You will manage the organisation of the annual Warm Homes Sheffield event which promotes the range of services available across the city to homeowners, tenants and landlords.

You will need a keen eye for detail and a methodical approach, together with the confidence to plan and organise your own workload. You will manage competing priorities, respond positively to changes and challenges, and know when to work independently or seek support from colleagues.

Required Experience

Experience in energy efficiency, housing, community engagement or a related area would be valuable, but it is not essential. More important is your ability to build relationships, communicate clearly and develop the knowledge needed to support tenants with confidence. We will support you to learn about Solar PV and the wider energy efficiency sector.

Why join us?

You will be an integral part of a small team delivering practical improvements to council homes and helping residents benefit from warmer, more energy-efficient and affordable homes.
