What we're looking for
It is essential that you hold a relevant PhD/DPhil in virology or related sciences with relevant research experience. You must have experience in virology and working with containment level 2 pathogens. Experience in general molecular biology techniques and cell biology is must.
The role
We are seeking a motivated and ambitious Postdoctoral Researcher to join an exciting multidisciplinary research programme investigating the relationship between neurotropic viral infections and Alzheimer's disease. Emerging epidemiological and experimental evidence suggests that neurotropic viral infections, including herpes viruses, influenza and SARS-CoV-2, may be associated with an increased risk of developing Alzheimer's disease.
These viruses may contribute to disease progression by increasing amyloid beta and tau levels, promoting inflammation and inducing cell death. Herpes viruses can also establish latent infections, which may further contribute to Alzheimer's disease pathology, particularly in individuals carrying the APOE E4 genetic risk variant.
Your research will focus on defining the mechanisms through which neurotropic viruses contribute to Alzheimer's disease pathology in neurons and glial cells, while investigating how different APOE genotypes influence these processes. You will take responsibility for managing your own academic research and associated administrative activities, coordinating multiple aspects of the project and ensuring that research objectives and deadlines are successfully met. You will contribute ideas for new research projects and have the opportunity to adapt existing scientific methods as well as develop new techniques and experimental protocols.
Job description
This position is offered full time on a fixed term contract for 18 months and is funded by the department.
Only applications received before 12 midday on 25 November 2026 will be considered. Please quote 188677 on all correspondence.
