The role

Art History at Oxford Lifelong Learning has recently undergone major changes, providing students with courses that are flexible for today's part-time learner, while retaining the highest standards of curriculum design, pedagogical approaches, and academic rigour. The curriculum across the Undergraduate programme, in particular, showcases the latest debates in the field, offering global perspectives on a wide range of art forms and periods. A particular highlight of this programme is the opportunity to teach our students in museums across the city of Oxford and further afield.

As a departmental tutor, you will design and deliver a variety of classes/courses across the Department's portfolio of programmes. This teaching is delivered throughout the calendar year. Most classes are held at the Department for Continuing Education, although some may be delivered on University or College premises, or online.

You will work in support of teaching which includes contributing to curriculum development and review, assessment and examination, quality assurance and professional development. You will have the opportunity to design content or learning materials within existing frameworks and make appropriate modifications to existing materials on the basis of the knowledge or experience of the learner(s). You will work collegiately with colleagues, sharing in collaborative decisions affecting the course and proposing and implementing improvements to working methods, to ensure high standards are maintained.

You will teach on our part-time award-bearing courses, including the Certificate and Diploma modules (first-year undergraduate level (FHEQ level 4) and second-year (FHEQ level 5)). In addition, you might be required to teach across our wider provision, including short weekly classes, the day and weekend programme, and summer schools (as part of or addition to the 0.06 FTE). Your duties include teaching face-to-face and online, marking and providing feedback on assessments, and providing supervision. The face-to-face Diploma teaching sessions for the 2026-2027 academic year will take place on Thursdays from 2pm-4pm at Ewert House (from 15 April 2027-13 May 2027) and future teaching would take place on select Fridays from 10am-5.30pm at Rewley House and in Oxford museums.

This is a part-time position (0.06FTE), available on a permanent contract.

About the role

Oxford Lifelong Learning in the Department for Continuing Education is seeking to appoint an enthusiastic Departmental tutor in History of Art with a specialism in nineteenth-century British art in global contexts to join our teaching team. If you thrive on innovative pedagogy, situating art history in its global contexts, and conveying your knowledge and research to lifelong learners, we would love to hear from you.

About you

Your research and teaching engage with current critical and theoretical debates in the discipline, and you have excellent teaching and pedagogical skills. Your research focuses on nineteenth-century British art in global contexts. You will be able to teach on more traditional Victorian art (such as the Pre-Raphaelites) but also on Victorian art in its global imperial contexts. You may also have regional expertise beyond Europe, particularly in areas shaped by British colonial histories.

Your research and teaching might also engage with issues such as imperial and colonial histories and legacies; materiality and making; gender and sexuality; ecology and the environment; race and racialisation; or class, poverty and inequality and your work and teaching take a transnational or cross-cultural approach.

You enjoy collaborating with others and working in a friendly team environment and you are excited about teaching lifelong learners.
