The role

About us

UCL is a global university, committed to transforming education, research and innovation to create positive change. Through the Higher Education Development & Support Institute (HEDS), we bring together expertise in education development and careers to enhance the student experience and support students and graduates to achieve their ambitions.

UCL Careers provides careers education and guidance to current students, graduates and staff, alongside recruitment solutions for employers. Our core service supports students in navigating the recruitment and selection process, from developing effective CVs and cover letters through to preparing for interviews and securing opportunities in the UK and globally.

As part of HEDS, UCL Careers works closely with faculties, departments, employers and other partners to ensure our careers and employability provision reflects the changing graduate labour market and the needs of our diverse student community.

About the role

We are looking for a Recruitment & Selection Advisor to join our team in our careers team. This is an excellent opportunity for a careers and employability professional who is passionate about helping students and graduates develop the confidence and skills they need to succeed in the recruitment process.

You will provide expert, practical advice to students and graduates applying for internships, graduate roles, jobs and further study. This will include delivering one-to-one appointments, providing constructive feedback on CVs, cover letters, application forms, motivation statements and professional profiles, and helping individuals understand how to tailor their applications effectively to different opportunities.

You will also design and deliver engaging small-group workshops on employability and recruitment, including topics such as CV tailoring, cover letter writing and application forms. You will use your knowledge of recruitment and selection to make these sessions practical, interactive and relevant to the needs of UCL students and graduates.

A strong understanding of graduate recruitment and selection practices will be important in this role. You will draw on your experience of how employers recruit and assess candidates, alongside current labour market and sector knowledge, to help students understand what employers are looking for and how to navigate recruitment processes successfully.

You will work with a diverse student population across UCL's faculties, supporting undergraduates, taught Masters students and research students, including PhD students. You will also contribute to research into recruitment practices and graduate labour market trends, sharing insights with colleagues and incorporating them into student advice, workshops and online careers resources.

The role offers the opportunity to collaborate widely across UCL Careers, faculties and departments, as well as with employers and alumni. You may also contribute to careers events, sector-focused activities and wider Careers projects. Please note, the activities in this role follow the main employer recruitment season and therefore in the Autumn term you will be expected to undertake approximately 5 hours of one to one student application advice appointments per day. This will decrease in the Spring and Summer terms in line with student demand.

Please note, this is an internal recruitment advert, available to eligible UCL workers. The role offers hybrid working with currently a minimum of 2-days per week in our Bloomsbury offices (subject to change). Please draft your application and include all essential/desirable criteria in your supporting statement detailing how you meet each individual criterion.

Job Ref: B06-00207

Closing Date: 28-10-2026 - 23:59 (UK time)

Interviews: Interviews are due to take place from 24th November

About you

You will have professional experience in careers and employability, graduate recruitment and selection, or a closely related area, with a strong understanding of the challenges students and graduates face when entering the labour market.

You will have experience of advising students, graduates or other early-career individuals on a one-to-one basis, with the ability to quickly build rapport and provide clear, specific and constructive feedback. You will be confident discussing applications and helping individuals identify how they can strengthen and tailor their CVs, cover letters and other application materials.

You will also have experience of planning and delivering small-group workshops or training sessions on employability, ideally covering areas such as CV writing, CV tailoring, cover letters, applications, interviews or other aspects of graduate recruitment. You will be able to create an engaging and inclusive learning environment that encourages participants to develop their own skills and confidence.

Your experience will include an understanding of graduate recruitment and selection, enabling you to provide credible, labour-market-informed advice on what employers are looking for and how recruitment processes operate across different sectors. Experience of engaging with employers, undertaking labour market research or keeping up to date with recruitment trends would be particularly valuable.

You will be an excellent communicator who can deliver advice and feedback with diplomacy and tact, including when working with students from diverse backgrounds and those whose first language may not be English. You will be comfortable managing a busy workload, particularly during peak graduate recruitment periods, while maintaining a high standard of service.

Above all, you will take a facilitative and educational approach, helping students and graduates to develop the knowledge, skills and confidence to navigate recruitment and selection processes independently. You will be collaborative, organised and committed to delivering an inclusive careers and employability service that makes a meaningful difference to our students and graduates.
