The role

This Postdoctoral Research Fellowship forms part of the AHRC-funded project Christian Books from Oxyrhynchus, led at UCL by N. Gonis in collaboration with colleagues at the University of Birmingham and the University of Oxford. The project investigates unpublished Oxyrhynchus papyri containing fragments of the Septuagint, the New Testament, and other early Christian literature, with the aim of advancing our understanding of the history of these texts and providing new insights into the production and use of Christian books in Roman and late antique Egypt. The Research Fellow will contribute to this wider programme of research by working on papyri containing fragments of the Septuagint.

You will have completed a PhD in a relevant field and possess specialist expertise in Greek literary papyrology. You should have an excellent command of Hellenistic Greek, the ability to decipher fragmentary and damaged papyrus texts, and a reading knowledge of modern scholarly languages relevant to the discipline. Familiarity with the society and culture of late Roman Egypt, the textual history of the Greek Bible, Biblical Hebrew, and/or other languages relevant to Hebrew Bible scholarship would be advantageous. You should also possess excellent written and interpersonal communication skills in English, strong attention to detail, and the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a research environment.

Further requirements can be found in the job description.

What you'll do

  • To contribute to the research programme of Christian Books from Oxyrhynchus under the direction of the Project Lead and Co-leads.
  • To carry out high-quality independent research.
  • To edit unpublished Oxyrhynchus papyri containing fragments of the Septuagint.
  • To contribute to the revision of editions by other scholars.
  • To participate in regular project meetings.
  • To assist in organising project events.
  • To help maximise the scholarly impact and visibility of the project.
  • To participate in research-support and outreach activities as directed by the line manager.

In addition to the above the post-holder is expected to:

  • Actively follow UCL policies, including those relating to equal opportunities, and give consideration within their role to how they can advance equality of opportunity and foster good relations between people who share a relevant protected characteristic and those who do not share it.
  • Maintain an awareness and observation of Fire and Health and Safety Regulations.
  • Carry out their duties in a resource-efficient manner and actively support UCL's Sustainability Strategy, policies, and objectives within the remit of their role.
  • Carry out any such other duties as are within the scope, spirit and purpose of the post as requested by the line manager.
