The role

About us

Our mission is to maximise and advocate for the holistic health of all children, young people and the adults they will become, through world-class research, education and public engagement. The UCL GOS ICH, together with its clinical partner Great Ormond Street Hospital for Children, forms the largest concentration of children's health research outside North America. The 2024-29 GOS ICH strategy focuses on its five scientific programmes. GOS ICH's activities include active engagement with children and families, to ensure that our work is relevant and appropriate to their needs. GOS ICH generates the funding for our research by setting out our proposals in high quality applications to public, charitable and industrial funding bodies and disseminates the results of our research by publication in the medical and scientific literature, to clinicians, policy makers and the wider public. The Institute offers world-class education and training across a wide range of teaching and life learning programmes which address the needs of students and professional groups who are interested in and undertaking work relevant to child health. GOS ICH holds an Athena SWAN Charter Gold Award. Please only attach relevant documents to your application (qualifications, cover letters, supporting statements) and avoid attaching large files e.g. research papers, thesis, publications etc.

About the role

We are looking for a Laboratory Management Assistant to join the Laboratory Management Team at the UCL GOS Institute of Child Health. This is a varied, practical role supporting the smooth day-to-day running of laboratory facilities across ICH and Zayed Centre for Research (ZCR). Working as part of the wider Laboratory Management Team, you will support laboratory operations, communal equipment, inspections, health and safety activities, Estates matters, laboratory moves and sustainability initiatives. You will also provide purchasing and procurement support, including obtaining quotations, raising purchase orders, liaising with suppliers and helping to maintain accurate purchasing and financial records. The role also includes maintaining Laboratory Management information and records, supporting meetings and committees, and working closely with the CL3 Laboratory Manager on routine checks, documentation, equipment, stock and general laboratory organisation. You will work with a wide range of colleagues across ICH, GOSH and UCL, so a helpful, professional and collaborative approach is important. This is an on-site role based at UCL GOS Institute of Child Health. The role is a secondment cover for 12 months in the first instance.

About you

You will have a relevant biological or biomedical science degree, or equivalent, together with experience of working in a research laboratory environment. You should be comfortable working with laboratory equipment and troubleshooting routine problems and have a good understanding of laboratory health and safety. You will be organised, accurate and able to manage a varied workload, using your own initiative while knowing when to escalate more complex issues. Good communication and interpersonal skills are essential, as you will work closely with laboratory users, suppliers and colleagues across Professional Services. Experience of supporting purchasing or procurement activities, such as raising orders and liaising with suppliers, is important, along with an awareness of the need to follow organisational procurement and financial procedures. You should also have strong Microsoft Office skills and a positive, practical and helpful approach to problem-solving. Experience of laboratory safety systems and previous administrative experience within a laboratory environment would be an advantage.
