The role

About Us

Royal Museums Greenwich is a collection of diverse historical sites. The sites are the National Maritime Museum, Cutty Sark, the Royal Observatory, and the Queen's House. Each of these sites has a unique identity and a common purpose to serve our communities, through sharing our collections and expertise. We are a place to explore the sea, space, art and history, and our strategy 'Charting Our Course' puts our people at the core of its success.

The Role

The Fire Safety Assistant will provide temporary support to the Health and Safety Manager with a programme of fire safety work across Royal Museums Greenwich.

The role will combine practical site-based work, information gathering, administration and liaison with colleagues. The postholder will work with a good degree of independence, using their initiative to progress straightforward tasks while escalating more complex issues to the Health & Safety Manager or relevant specialist team.

This is an opportunity to gain practical experience of fire safety management, compliance and risk management within a complex organisation.

Main responsibilities

Fire extinguisher management

· Undertake site visits to create an accurate asset register of fire extinguishers across RMG, including type, size and location.

Fire Action Notices

· Complete the replacement of fire safety action notices where appropriate and practical.

Evacuation chairs

· Support the transfer of evacuation chair management from the Visitor Team to Health & Safety.

· Establish and maintain a central register covering location, equipment, condition, servicing, inspection and training.

· Identify gaps in current arrangements and support the development of a consistent management process.

Fire Risk Assessment actions

· Create a Fire Risk Assessment action tracker for newly completed assessments and follow up outstanding recommendations.

· Liaise with the Estates team and undertake basic site checks to confirm progress.

· Gather evidence of completion and identify actions that remain outstanding or require further work.

General responsibilities

· Work across all RMG sites as required (including PPMCC, Brass Foundry & Chatham).

· Maintain accurate records, registers and trackers using Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft 365 applications.

· Plan and prioritise own workload and follow actions through to completion.

· Communicate effectively with colleagues and follow up outstanding actions.

· Identify and report straightforward fire safety concerns following appropriate training.

Training and support

Full on-the-job training and support will be provided by the Health & Safety Manager. Previous professional fire safety experience is not required.

The time commitment is 2 full weekdays per week, within existing contracted hours, normally Monday-Friday, with flexibility as required. The role is expected to continue for 5 months, from November 2026 to April 2027, and the postholder should be able to commit to this length of time. The postholder will remain within the Visitor and Sales team for employment purposes, including annual leave arrangements.

This is an internal only vacancy. Please only apply if you are currently employed as a Visitor and Sales Team Leader at Royal Museums Greenwich. As the role requires working 2 full weekdays per week, staff members who currently work weekends only or lunch cover are unfortunately unable to apply.

An added skill is when you undertake a part-time, temporary role with different responsibilities to your current role, during some of the hours you would usually be doing your regular work, with the aim of it being a development opportunity for Visitor and Sales Assistants and Bookings and Customer Service Coordinators. You do not work more hours than your current contracted role, and your salary remains the same.

A member of staff can only undertake one added skill at any one time, and you must have passed your probationary period to be eligible for this role. We recommend you speak to your line manager before applying for an added skill.

In your application, please include why you are interested in the role and what relevant experience you could bring to it.
