The role

At Metro Bank, we believe the best banking experience starts with people who genuinely care. We're not just delivering banking services; we're building trust through authentic connections. Here, our people come first. Our colleagues are part of a team that values individuality, collaboration and long-standing relationships. We are also all about balance, so most of our jobs offer the opportunity for hybrid working built around your role and home life, wherever possible.

What you will do:

As a Financial Crime Technology and AI Transformation Lead Manager, you will provide independent second-line oversight and challenge across Financial Crime and Fraud systems, controls and strategic transformation. You will lead engagement across material Financial Crime capabilities, including NextGen, and help ensure that existing and future technology-enabled controls remain effective, sustainable and aligned to regulatory requirements and the Bank's risk appetite.

We are particularly interested in candidates with deep expertise in one or more of the following capability areas:

  • Behavioural Detection and Monitoring: Transaction Monitoring, Fraud monitoring, detection models, scenarios, tuning, thresholds, alert and case management, and monitoring effectiveness.
  • Customer Risk and Screening: Customer Risk Assessment, Customer Screening, Payment Screening, sanctions and watchlists, matching logic, customer risk scoring, and KYC or customer data.
  • AI, Advanced Analytics and Agentic Capabilities: the application and oversight of AI, machine learning, advanced analytics and agentic capabilities within Financial Crime and Fraud, including their use in detection, screening, investigation, decision support or control automation, with appropriate consideration of governance, explainability, human oversight, data and control effectiveness.
You do not need to be a subject-matter expert across every area. We are looking for strong depth in a relevant Financial Crime control capability, combined with the breadth and leadership skills to apply that expertise across technology, transformation and wider Financial Crime capability oversight.

  • Lead independent second-line oversight and challenge across a portfolio of Financial Crime and Fraud systems, controls and transformation activity, including NextGen.
  • Act as a senior Financial Crime and Fraud representative across Product, Technology, Data, Architecture, Operations and Transformation, bringing together specialist input to form clear second-line positions and recommendations.
  • Provide deep oversight and challenge across one or more core Financial Crime capability areas, particularly Behavioural Detection and Monitoring and/or Customer Risk and Screening.
  • Assess whether Financial Crime and Fraud systems and technology-enabled controls are appropriately designed, implemented, governed and capable of operating effectively and sustainably.
  • Shape and challenge future-state customer journeys, operating models, processes, technology and data solutions to ensure Financial Crime and Fraud requirements are appropriately embedded.
  • Coordinate, challenge and translate Financial Crime and Fraud requirements into clear implications for business, process, data and control design.
  • Challenge the design of preventative, detective and monitoring controls, including models, scenarios, rules, thresholds, screening logic, risk-scoring approaches and associated data where relevant to your capability portfolio.
  • Review and challenge proposed solutions, identifying control gaps, weaknesses and emerging Financial Crime and Fraud risks before implementation.
  • Assess technology, data, automation and AI-enabled capabilities, providing challenge on associated Financial Crime risks, governance, transparency, explainability and human oversight.
  • Provide independent challenge of implementation readiness, control effectiveness, delivery risks and material dependencies, escalating concerns where appropriate.
  • Translate regulatory requirements, emerging risks, assurance findings and lessons from remediation into practical recommendations for capability and control enhancement.
  • Represent Change & Technology Oversight in senior working groups and governance forums, providing clear risk opinions, recommendations and constructive challenge.
  • Any other duties as reasonably required within the role.
And... we are a bank, so risk is a part of everything we do. We love people who take responsibility, do the right thing for customers, colleagues and Metro Bank, and have the ability to call out any concerns.

What you will need:

  • Significant experience within Financial Crime, Fraud, Compliance, Risk or a related control function within a regulated environment.
  • Deep subject-matter expertise in at least one core Financial Crime capability area, ideally:
    • Behavioural Detection and Monitoring, such as Transaction Monitoring, Fraud monitoring, scenarios, models, tuning or detection effectiveness; and/or
    • Customer Risk and Screening, such as Customer Risk Assessment, Customer Screening, Payment Screening, matching, sanctions or watchlists, customer risk scoring, or KYC and customer data.
    • AI, Advanced Analytics and Agentic Capabilities, including practical experience of applying, governing or independently challenging AI, machine learning, advanced analytics or agentic solutions within Financial Crime, Fraud or another relevant regulated control environment.
  • Sufficient breadth across Financial Crime and Fraud to understand how different controls, systems, data and customer journeys interact across the wider control environment.
  • Strong understanding of Financial Crime systems and technology-enabled controls, with the ability to challenge control design, system functionality, data dependencies, implementation and control effectiveness.
  • Experience working across significant transformation, technology, digital or strategic change, translating regulatory and risk requirements into practical business, control and technology outcomes.
  • Experience providing independent oversight, challenge or assurance over control design, delivery, implementation readiness or ongoing effectiveness.
  • An understanding of relevant model, scenario, rule or screening lifecycles, including the importance of testing, tuning, thresholds, data quality and performance monitoring.
  • Experience assessing and challenging technology, data, automation or AI-enabled solutions to ensure Financial Crime and Fraud risks are appropriately understood and managed.
  • Strong stakeholder-management and influencing skills, with the ability to engage senior colleagues across Business, Operations, Technology, Product, Architecture, Data and Transformation.
  • The ability to interpret complex technical or control issues and translate them into clear risk implications, recommendations and decisions.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the confidence to challenge constructively and escalate material concerns.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including experience preparing and presenting risk opinions, governance papers and recommendations to senior stakeholders and decision-making forums.
  • ICA, ACAMS or an equivalent Financial Crime qualification is desirable.
  • Understand the risks associated with your job and what that means for you, Metro Bank and all our stakeholders.
Our promise to you...

  • We will make sure that you are well rewarded by providing you with a competitive salary, discretionary annual bonus and a wide range of benefits, including generous holiday allowance, an attractive pension scheme, healthcare, life assurance and a number of colleague discounts.
  • We will give you the training and support to succeed in your role, along with plenty of internal opportunities to progress your career. Around 40% of our recruitment comes from internal promotions.
Important Footnote
Diverse teams really are the best teams. We know that candidates (especially women, research tells us) may be put off applying for a job unless they can tick every box. We also know that 'normal' office hours aren't always doable, and while we can't accommodate every flexible working request we are happy to be asked. So if you are excited about working with us and think you can do much of what we are looking for but aren't sure if you are 100% there yet... why not give it a whirl? Good luck!
