A 12-month placement on live production work, across factory engineering and MasonOS - with real responsibility, not shadowing.
A 12-month placement across factory engineering and MasonOS, on live production work rather than a side project invented to keep a student busy. The parts you help move go to customers in aerospace, defence and energy, which means you will be trusted early and corrected quickly.
Real tasks alongside the engineering or software teams, and the record of what you changed. You will work on data analysis and process improvement against production that is actually running, and document why what you did worked - the write-up matters as much as the fix, because the next person inherits it. Nobody will hand you a curated problem set: you will be expected to find the next thing worth doing.

You should be studying engineering, computer science or something adjacent, with a basic understanding of software development and a genuine interest in how things are made rather than only how they are designed. Initiative counts for more than experience here. Useful but not essential: a leadership role in a university engineering team, or any previous part-time work.
