The role
Job summary
As an Attendance Support Advisor, you will join a pilot service supporting colleagues to return to work as early as safely possible, sustain their return and prevent further sickness absence. Through early contact and compassionate, respectful, non-judgemental conversations, you will build trust and help colleagues feel heard, supported and connected to work.
Working with colleagues, managers and specialist teams across UHB, you will draw on their expertise and available tools to coordinate tailored return-to-work plans that address individual needs and barriers. Regular contact, follow-up and reviews will help agreed actions progress as needs change.
The pilot's primary key performance indicator (KPI) is a reduction in sickness absence. Your contribution will focus on early intervention and practical support to help colleagues return safely, remain well at work and avoid further absence.
We're investing in dedicated support because helping colleagues stay well and connected to work benefits individuals, teams and patients. Your role centres on early-intervention sickness case management, relationships and access to support--not medical advice or ownership of formal long-term absence procedures. Line managers remain responsible for managing attendance in their teams.
Main duties of the job
Working with managers and specialist teams, you will help put agreed reasonable adjustments into practice, including workplace changes and phased returns informed by specialist advice. You will track cases, referrals and actions, review return plans, seek help with barriers and keep accurate, confidential records.
You will record timely, accurate information on support, return-to-work progress and outcomes. Sharing recurring barriers, themes and learning with the Attendance Lead will help evaluate and improve the pilot and demonstrate its impact on safe, sustained returns and preventing further absence.
The work can be emotionally demanding you may support distressed, anxious or frustrated colleagues facing difficult health or workplace circumstances and uncertain recovery. It can also be deeply rewarding to help someone feel heard, access support or return through an agreed adjustment.
You will bring compassion, practical thinking, organisation and persistence, stay calm amid competing priorities, seek specialist help when needed and challenge your own assumptions and biases.
The Attendance Lead will support you through regular one-to-ones, professional supervision, case reviews and reflection. Across UHB, you will connect with the team, share learning, develop skills and ask for help. We'll support your wellbeing as you help shape a pilot that makes a difference for colleagues, services and patients.
