The role

Job Title: Sister / Charge Nurse, Band 6

Department: Oncology Outpatients

Location: 22 Devonshire Place, London, W1G 6JA

Salary: £45,469 to £55,564

Hours: 37.5 hours per week, Monday to Friday

We are looking for an experienced oncology nurse to join our Oncology Outpatients team as a Band 6 Sister / Charge Nurse.

Combining specialist clinical care with day-to-day leadership, you will support patients with a range of oncology and haemato oncology diagnoses, helping them feel informed, reassured and cared for throughout their treatment. You will also guide junior colleagues, coordinate shifts and help shape a safe, responsive outpatient service.

A little about the role

You will care for patients with a range of oncology and haemato oncology diagnoses, providing systemic anticancer therapies (SACT) and supportive treatments. From assessing patients before treatment to helping them manage symptoms and side effects, you will offer clear advice, listen to their concerns and support their individual needs.

Alongside your clinical responsibilities, you will take charge of shifts and deputise for the Unit Manager when required. You will be someone colleagues can turn to for guidance, helping the team manage priorities and deliver safe, well coordinated care.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Safely administering SACT and supportive treatments through peripheral and central venous access devices.
  • Using UKONS triage to assess patients, recognise treatment related toxicities and support timely access to acute oncology care.
  • Managing symptoms, recognising oncology emergencies and escalating concerns appropriately.
  • Reviewing upcoming treatments to ensure results, prescriptions and relevant clinical information are available.
  • Working closely with consultants, clinical nurse specialists, pharmacy and allied health professionals to coordinate care.
  • Mentoring junior nurses, healthcare assistants and students, supporting induction and helping colleagues develop their clinical confidence.
  • Contributing to audits, clinical governance and improvements informed by patient feedback and evidence-based practice.

We are looking for

You will be an experienced cancer nurse who understands the importance of kindness, clear communication and sound clinical judgement. You will enjoy sharing your knowledge, supporting colleagues and helping patients and their families feel informed and reassured.

Key Requirments:

  • Registered Adult Nurse with current NMC registration.
  • A nursing degree, or evidence that you are working towards one.
  • At least two years of post-registration experience in an acute oncology or haemato oncology setting.
  • A UK accredited chemotherapy module and evidence of clinical competence.
  • A SACT and IV Passport, with experience administering systemic anticancer therapies.
  • Competence in phlebotomy, cannulation and the use of central venous access devices
  • Experience taking charge of shifts and supporting the education of students or junior colleagues.
  • Sound knowledge of cancer treatments, clinical governance and risk management, alongside evidence of continued professional development.
  • Experience in ambulatory care, acute oncology triage or preceptorship programmes would be an advantage.

What you will be part of

You will join a specialist outpatient team where strong working relationships and clear communication make a real difference to patients undergoing cancer treatment. Working closely with nurses, consultants, pharmacy colleagues and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will help patients navigate their care with confidence and provide support during what can be a challenging time.

For an experienced oncology nurse, this is an opportunity to build on your specialist knowledge while developing your leadership and mentoring skills. Working alongside the Unit Manager and Clinical Practice Educator, you will contribute to staff education, practice development and improvements in care, while remaining closely involved in clinical nursing.
