Join Sheffield City Council as one of three Finance Officers and help services make sound decisions and get the most from public money. You'll build your technical skills, gain experience across council finance and do work that matters to the city.
Develop your career
We offer optional study support towards an appropriate AAT or recognised CCAB professional accountancy qualification. Further study is a choice, not a requirement.
What you'll be doing
We have 3 full time (37 hours) permanent posts available, 1 in the Financial Accounting team and 2 in the Service Accounting team. Depending on where you are placed within the Finance Service, you will:
- Provide accurate financial information, advice and reports for a range of audiences.
- Help managers understand budgets and financial performance and resolve financial queries.
- Contribute to financial and management accounting, reporting, projects and the capital programme.
- Build relationships with colleagues and stakeholders, share knowledge and help people understand financial policies and processes.
- Improve systems and ways of working, supporting the Finance Service's and Council's wider objectives.
What we're looking for
You'll bring practical experience in finance, accounting or financial management, with relevant qualifications or equivalent knowledge gained at work. You may be AAT qualified, part-qualified or studying towards a professional accountancy qualification.
We're looking for:
- Good knowledge of financial processes and systems, with strong numeracy and analytical skills.
- Confidence using Excel and other digital tools.
- The ability to organise your workload and meet deadlines.
- Clear communication and relationship-building skills.
- A collaborative approach, curiosity and a willingness to learn and improve how things are done.
Why join us?
Alongside work with a lasting public impact, we offer:
- Flexible and hybrid working arrangements
- Excellent work-life balance
- A highly competitive Local Government Pension Scheme
- Generous annual leave
- Professional development and career progression opportunities
- A supportive, collaborative and ambitious team culture.

Interviews are expected to take place face to face at Howden House during the week commencing 7 December 2026.
We are investing in our workforce and are promoting opportunities to our under-represented groups. We value equality, diversity and inclusion and are focused on increasing the diversity of our workforce, particularly the number of Black, Asian, Minority Ethnic, Disabled and LGBTQ+ people, so that our teams reflect the communities in the city we serve. We are also supporting staff with unpaid caring responsibilities to work flexibly.
It is a great time to join us and we welcome your application.
Under the Guaranteed Interview scheme, applicants who are disabled, care leavers, or armed forces veterans will be guaranteed an interview if they meet the essential criteria and indicate their eligibility on the application form. Sometimes, if lots of people apply, we might not be able to interview everyone who qualifies for the Guarantee. In these cases, we'll interview the candidates who best meet the essential criteria for the job.
Full-time employees work 37 hours for 52 weeks of the year and we offer a generous holiday entitlement. We are open to discussions about a wide range of flexible working opportunities which benefit you and the Council, including reduced hour contracts, working part time or as a job share.
If you are appointed to this role, your starting salary will be at the bottom of the grade. If you provide payslip evidence that your basic pay is greater than the bottom of the grade, we will consider starting you at the point of minimum advantage within the grade.
Equality of pay is extremely important to us. All roles at Sheffield City Council are going through an evaluation process which may result in changes to some pay arrangements from 2026. Read about the new job evaluation process to be introduced at Sheffield City Council.
We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of all individuals, ensuring a safe and supportive environment for everyone and where appropriate to the role the successful applicant will be required to undertake relevant safeguarding checks.
