Requirements

What we're looking for

  • A degree or equivalent qualification in quantity surveying or a related subject
  • At least 8 years’ experience as a Quantity Surveyor, in consultancy or contracting
  • Experience of healthcare projects or other live, occupied environments is strongly preferred
  • Sound knowledge of JCT contracts
  • Commercially aware, with good negotiation skills and the ability to build strong client relationships
  • Able to analyse costs, contracts and risk objectively and give a clear recommendation
  • Organised and self-motivated, able to manage several projects at once and work to tight deadlines
  • Adaptable to changes in scope, client requirements and market conditions
  • Keeps up with changes in construction law, including the Building Safety Act, as well as new software and estimating techniques

We are looking for someone who:

  • is dependable, careful and happy to take responsibility for their own projects
  • works well in a team and is easy for clients and colleagues to deal with.

Nice to have

  • MRICS is welcome but not essential. If you want to work towards chartership, we will support you with the APC
  • Experience of technically complex projects. Building safety remedial work or refurbishment experience is an advantage
  • Confident with digital measurement and estimating tools. CostX is ideal, but experience of similar software is fine. An interest in BIM and AI is a plus
  • Life cycle costing, life cycle assessment, capital allowances and reinstatement cost assessments are useful but not essential

The role

We are recruiting a Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our Winchester cost management team. Around half of your time will go on our healthcare work at a major acute NHS hospital in Southampton. The other half will support the rest of the team across building safety remedial works, higher education, residential and compliance advisory work.

Much of the healthcare work takes place in live, occupied buildings, so we want a safe pair of hands: someone careful and dependable who is comfortable working around clinical staff and patients, and the phasing and access constraints that come with that. If you have worked in healthcare or another live environment, such as a hospital, school or care setting, that experience will count for a lot.

Our projects range from £100k to £20m. Chartered status is welcome but not essential, and we actively encourage applications from QSs with a contracting background who are looking for a change.

What you'll do

  • Lead cost management on your projects from inception to completion, supporting clients and the wider project team in their decision making
  • Take day-to-day cost responsibility for our healthcare work in a live hospital environment
  • Support the wider team on building safety remedial works and our other sectors, including higher education, residential and compliance advisory work
  • Produce feasibility studies, cost estimates and cost plans through the design stages, including bills of quantities
  • Evaluate the cost of building designs and alternative proposals to keep projects within budget
  • Prepare and issue tender documents, manage the tender process, analyse returns and recommend procurement routes to the client
  • Advise on building contract terms
  • Control cost after contract award, assessing the effect of variations and negotiating final account settlements
  • Attend meetings and prepare regular financial reports on the status of your projects
  • Use digital tools for quantity take-off and cost estimating
  • Coach and support junior QSs and apprentices on their projects and help them develop
  • Support the Partners and Associates with business planning and contribute to winning repeat work and new opportunities
  • Build and maintain trusted relationships with clients and consultants
