The role

This is a rare chance to sit right at the heart of Queen Mary's Engagement team, the group that brings the University's public and civic engagement together under a single plan. Working across our three pillars (Engaged Research, Engaged Education and Engaged Partnerships), you will be the person who keeps everything moving and connected.

No two weeks will look the same. One day you might be producing the team's newsletter or refreshing our webpages and social channels; the next, coordinating a grant panel, setting up an engagement forum, or supporting one of our partnership networks across east London. You will run our communications channels, coordinate events from booking pages through to on-the-day delivery, keep our finances and records in good order (including raising purchase orders and processing invoices on Agresso), and help pull together the data that shows the difference our work makes.

You will be the team's reliable first point of contact, trusted to organise a busy and varied workload with real independence. If you enjoy variety, thrive on making things happen, and want to see the tangible impact of engagement work up close, this role puts you in the middle of it all.

About You

We are looking for a brilliant organiser who loves getting things done. You will bring:

  • A degree or equivalent qualification, and experience in an administrative, coordination or support role in a busy, multi-stakeholder environment
  • A track record of supporting communications channels (newsletters, webpages, social media, shared inboxes) and of coordinating events, including booking and registration systems
  • Confidence with financial administration (raising purchase orders and processing invoices, ideally on Agresso or a similar system) and with maintaining accurate records and databases
  • Experience of committee or meeting support, including minute-taking and following up actions
  • Excellent organisation, first-rate written and spoken communication, strong IT skills, and a sharp eye for detail
  • The ability to work on your own initiative and as a genuine team player, building good relationships across the University and with external partners

Experience of higher education, or of public and civic engagement, and familiarity with tools such as a CMS, Mailchimp or Canva, would all be a bonus. A willingness to work flexibly on occasion, including the odd evening or weekend event, completes the picture.

About the company & team

The Engagement team sits within the Office of the Principal and brings the University's public engagement and civic engagement functions together as one team, working to one plan. We enable engagement across three pillars (Engaged Research, Engaged Education and Engaged Partnerships), partnering with colleagues across Queen Mary and with communities and organisations across east London and beyond. This is a small, ambitious and friendly team where a cross-cutting role like this one really is central to what we deliver, and where you will get exposure to the full breadth of the University's civic mission.
