The role

What you'll be doing

You'll develop and deliver media strategies that show how Nationwide is delivering on its purpose 'Banking - but fairer, more rewarding, and for the good of society'. You will also coordinate media activity for key corporate milestones, including financial results and the AGM.

Working alongside the Incident Communications team, you will be part of the 24/7 on call rota and support crisis communications planning and preparedness. You will also develop our approach to measuring reputation and media sentiment, using data and insight to shape strategy and horizon-scan for internal and external issues that could affect Nationwide.

You'll advise senior stakeholders on media opportunities and reputational challenges, prepare spokespeople for media engagement, and build trusted relationships with journalists and internal stakeholders. As part of a busy press office, you'll also craft and shape clear, accurate and timely media communications.

About you

As a minimum you'll have:

  • A proactive, collaborative approach and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

  • Excellent news judgement and an established network of business media contacts.

  • Proven experience of working as part of a media relations or communications team, landing high profile national business coverage.

  • Strong storytelling skills, with experience of writing engaging, concise copy for different audiences.

  • Experience advising and influencing senior stakeholders on media opportunities, reputational issues and communications activity.

  • Confident working with senior stakeholders, supported by strong influencing and negotiation skills.

  • Clear and effective written and verbal communication, with the ability to adapt your style for different audiences.

  • Proven experience of managing media issues and crisis communications as well as working on a 24/7 incident team.

  • Financially literate, comfortable working with data and insights to underpin the key messaging.

Our customer first behaviours put customers and members at the heart of how we work together. They are the set of behaviours that every colleague needs to display, in every role:

  • Feel what customers feel - We step into our customers' shoes, using their feedback and insights to empathise with them and to understand their needs, so that every decision we make starts and finishes with our customers in mind

  • Say it straight - We are brave in speaking out and saying what we think - we're honest and direct with good intent, openly sharing diverse perspectives to reach the best conclusions and using language everyone can understand

  • Push for better - We don't settle for mediocrity, we challenge the status quo, taking responsibility for continuous improvement and personal development

  • Get it done - We prioritise what will have the greatest impact, we are decisive, and we take accountability for delivering brilliant customer outcomes

You can strengthen your application by showing how our customer first behaviours resonate with you, and where you may have already demonstrated these.
