Role:
The Character Artist creates high-quality stylised characters and creatures, taking assets from initial development through to final in-game implementation. The role combines strong artistic skills with practical production experience, translating concept art and creative direction into compelling characters that capture the personality and intent of the original design.
Using Maya, ZBrush, Substance 3D Painter and Unreal Engine 5, you will create production-ready assets across modelling, sculpting, texturing, rigging and animation, ensuring they meet the visual, gameplay and technical requirements of real-time games.
Working closely with Art, Design, Animation and Technical Art, you will take ownership of assigned work from development through to completion, responding to feedback while balancing artistic quality, performance and production schedules.
The role requires a strong eye for form, anatomy and stylisation, alongside clear communication, effective collaboration and a dependable approach to delivering polished work within established pipelines.
Responsibilities:
- Create and deliver stylised characters and creatures from initial development through to final in-game implementation.
- Interpret concept art, references and art direction, translating them into compelling 3D models that retain the intent and personality of the design.
- Develop strong silhouettes, shapes, proportions, facial features and surface details that make characters and creatures appealing and readable.
- Sculpt, model, retopologise, UV and texture production-ready assets.
- Collaborate with designers, animators and technical artists to ensure assets meet visual, gameplay, rigging and animation needs.
- Import and set up assets in Unreal Engine 5, checking models, materials and animations in-game and making adjustments as needed.
- Maintain consistent quality across assigned work while meeting agreed schedules and communicating progress, dependencies and risks.
- Work within agreed budgets for geometry, materials, textures and performance, coordinating with technical teams to resolve constraints.
- Review work in-game and respond to artistic, design and technical feedback throughout production.
- Share knowledge and provide constructive feedback to other artists, contributing to a supportive and collaborative team environment.
Essential:
- Proven professional experience in character and creature art, animation or a closely related game art role.
- A strong portfolio demonstrating high-quality stylised characters and creatures, including examples of animation.
- Professional experience using Maya, ZBrush and Substance 3D Painter.
- Strong 3D modelling and sculpting skills, with an understanding of anatomy, form, costume, materials and creature design.
- Ability to rig and animate characters and creatures, creating clear, appealing movement suitable for real-time games.
- Experience importing, setting up and reviewing character and creature assets in Unreal Engine 5.
- Understanding of real-time production workflows, including retopology, UVs, texturing, rigging, LOD and engine integration.
- Ability to interpret art direction and references, and carry work from development through to completion.
- A highly organised and productive approach, with the ability to manage work independently and meet agreed deadlines.
- Strong communication, collaboration and problem-solving skills, with the ability to respond effectively to feedback.
Desirable:
- Experience working on AAA titles or high-profile co-development projects.
- Experience creating modular costume pieces, accessories or reusable character components.
- Previous shipped title(s) in a character, creature or animation art capacity.
