Role Overview:
My client is seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor to join their commercial team, supporting rail infrastructure and maintenance works across the northern region, with potential involvement in the North West & Central rail framework.
The position will involve taking commercial responsibility for a varied portfolio of rail infrastructure and civil engineering schemes, ranging from minor reactive maintenance works through to larger project-based infrastructure schemes.
You will work across multiple frameworks and projects, ensuring effective commercial management throughout the project lifecycle. The role will also offer potential involvement in future ERP works as the programme progresses north.
The business is also diversifying beyond its established rail operations, having recently secured over 50 lots through the Pagabo framework across sectors including local government, housing, energy and water.
Based from the Chesterfield office, this will be a more mobile position, requiring regular interaction with operational teams and site visits depending on the nature and location of individual projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Manage the commercial aspects of rail infrastructure, maintenance and civil engineering works across northern frameworks.
- Take commercial responsibility for multiple projects and work packages, from initial pricing and procurement through to final accounts and commercial closeout.
- Administer NEC contracts, ensuring compliance with contractual requirements and effective management of commercial obligations.
- Prepare and manage valuations, applications for payment, variations and final accounts.
- Identify, assess and manage compensation events, ensuring appropriate contractual notices and supporting records are maintained.
- Monitor project costs, budgets, forecasts and commercial performance across multiple schemes.
- Prepare accurate cost reports, cash flow forecasts and commercial updates for senior management.
- Manage subcontractor procurement, tender assessments, appointments and commercial administration.
- Assess subcontractor applications, variations and final accounts, ensuring effective cost control.
- Identify and manage commercial risks and opportunities across individual projects and wider frameworks.
- Work closely with operational teams to ensure works are delivered in line with contractual, financial and programme requirements.
- Support commercial negotiations with clients, subcontractors and other project stakeholders.
- Undertake site visits as required to monitor progress, assess variations and support effective commercial management.
- Maintain accurate commercial records and ensure appropriate contractual documentation is completed.
- Support the wider commercial team across additional frameworks and projects as required.
Essential Requirements:
- Previous experience working as a Quantity Surveyor within rail infrastructure, civil engineering or maintenance projects.
- Previous experience working within the rail sector, ideally on Network Rail frameworks.
- Strong working knowledge of NEC contracts, particularly NEC3.
- Experience managing the commercial aspects of civil engineering, infrastructure, maintenance or construction projects.
- Strong understanding of contract administration, cost management, valuations, compensation events and final accounts.
- Experience managing multiple projects or work packages simultaneously.
- Ability to work independently and take ownership of commercial responsibilities.
- Strong communication, negotiation and stakeholder management skills.
- Willingness to travel to project sites across the northern region as required.
- Experience gained with a main contractor, subcontractor or client-side organisation will be considered.
Desired Requirements:
- Experience commercially managing a mixture of project-based and reactive maintenance works.
- Previous experience working across multiple Network Rail frameworks.
- Knowledge of rail civils, structures, earthworks, drainage, track, signalling or associated infrastructure works.
- Experience working across high-volume, lower-value schemes alongside larger infrastructure projects.
- Previous involvement in geographically dispersed projects or frameworks requiring regular site visits.
- Experience supporting the commercial delivery of minor works, maintenance or larger civil engineering schemes.
The Candidate:
This position will suit a commercially capable Quantity Surveyor who is comfortable managing multiple schemes across a varied portfolio of rail infrastructure and maintenance projects.
You will need to be organised, proactive and confident administering NEC contracts, with the ability to respond to changing priorities while maintaining effective commercial control.
Experience within rail infrastructure is essential, with candidates from reactive maintenance, minor works or larger project-based rail backgrounds encouraged to apply.
You will also need to be comfortable working across different project locations, building relationships with operational teams and taking ownership of your commercial responsibilities.
This is an excellent opportunity to join an established contractor with a strong presence in rail infrastructure and growing opportunities across several additional sectors.
If you are interested in applying for this role, please email your CV to Brooke Stell at Carrington West or call 02394 314914 for a confidential discussion.
