Nice to have

The role

Balfour Beatty has an exciting opportunity for an Assistant Project Engineer to join our team supporting the Lower Thames Crossing, one of the UK’s most significant infrastructure projects.

You’ll support the delivery of our Temporary Site Services package, working alongside experienced Project Engineers and Project Managers to help coordinate electrical systems, enabling works and associated site activities.

This is a fantastic opportunity for someone with an engineering or construction background who is looking to develop their project delivery experience on a major infrastructure scheme. You’ll gain hands-on exposure to engineering coordination, site logistics, programme management, technical assurance, sustainability and safe delivery.

Working closely with engineers, supervisors, subcontractors and other project teams, you’ll help make sure works are properly planned, coordinated and delivered safely, efficiently and to the required quality standards.

What you'll do

As an Assistant Project Engineer, you will:

  • Support the day-to-day planning and delivery of Temporary Site Services and enabling works across the project
  • Work alongside the Project Engineer and Project Manager to coordinate site activities and resolve day-to-day delivery issues
  • Help coordinate labour, plant, materials and site logistics to keep works progressing to programme
  • Maintain accurate project and site records, including progress updates, inspections, technical information and actions
  • Assist with short-term programmes, look-ahead plans and resource requirements
  • Monitor progress and provide clear updates on upcoming activities, risks and potential constraints
  • Coordinate with engineers, supervisors, subcontractors, suppliers and other disciplines
  • Support the coordination of design information, materials and supply-chain activities
  • Assist with site inspections, audits, quality records and handover documentation
  • Support Toolbox Talks, site briefings, inductions and workforce engagement
  • Help monitor subcontractor progress and performance against agreed requirements
  • Contribute to risk reviews, improvement activities and lessons learned
  • Support the safe delivery of works, maintaining Balfour Beatty’s focus on Zero Harm
  • Play a part in delivering more sustainable construction solutions, including the integration of zero-emission plant and digital power management systems

Who we're looking for

We’re looking for someone who is keen to build their career in engineering and project delivery and enjoys working collaboratively in a busy construction environment.

You’ll ideally have:

  • Experience or knowledge gained within construction, infrastructure, engineering, electrical works or a related environment
  • An understanding of how site-based works are planned, coordinated and delivered
  • Good organisational skills with the ability to manage information, records and competing priorities
  • Strong communication skills and the confidence to work with different teams, subcontractors and stakeholders
  • A proactive approach to identifying and resolving day-to-day issues, knowing when to escalate where appropriate
  • A strong awareness of health, safety, environmental and quality requirements
  • An interest in developing your knowledge of project programmes, commercial awareness, cost control and change management
  • Good attention to detail, particularly when maintaining technical and project records
  • A collaborative approach and a genuine interest in developing your engineering career on a major infrastructure project

Most importantly, you’ll bring a willingness to learn, take ownership and work as part of a team committed to delivering high-quality work safely.
