Background

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic Research Technician to join our research team at the University of Birmingham to investigate the mechanisms underlying mitochondrial and mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) dynamics during spermatogenesis.

The project will use Drosophila melanogaster as a genetic model to understand how mitochondria and mtDNA are maintained, organised and regulated during sperm development. In particular, we aim to investigate how mtDNA and mitochondria undergo dynamic changes during different stages of spermatogenesis, and identify the molecular mechanisms controlling these processes.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in Drosophila genetics and molecular biology, with an interest in mitochondrial biology and developmental processes. They will employ a combination of fly genetics, molecular techniques and advanced imaging approaches to investigate mtDNA dynamics during spermatogenesis.

This position is for 1 year for the first instance.

Role Summary

  • Work within a funded research project investigating mitochondrial DNA maintenance and dynamics during Drosophila spermatogenesis.
  • Apply expertise in Drosophila genetics, molecular biology and microscopy to investigate mitochondrial organisation and mtDNA behaviour during sperm development.
  • Provide technical support for experimental research, including maintaining fly stocks, generating genetic crosses, preparing samples and performing molecular and imaging experiments.
  • Contribute to experimental data collection, analysis, research presentations and scientific publications.

General Administration and Organisation

  1. Ensuring all records are accurate and kept up to date.
  2. Proactively maintain stocks of consumables, and when required generate purchase order requisitions using University systems.
  3. Receipt and correct storage of consumables/equipment and chemical reagents.
  4. Ensuring that the facilities are maintained in a clean, functional and safe condition, reporting any problems through the appropriate channels.
  5. Ensuring that PAT testing, calibration of equipment and locally and centrally held equipment inventories are up to date and maintained.
  6. Adopt a proactive attitude to assisting with and implementing carbon reduction and energy saving measures.
  7. Maintain a technical support based teaching laboratory website (how to guides for the preparation of materials, practical setup guides), and keeping these up to date as and when session requirements or protocols change or maintaining relevant research lab databases/records.
