Are you a pharmacist ready to take the next step in acute care? Join University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust as a Senior Support Pharmacist in Acute Medicine, a Band 7 role at the front door of one of the UK's busiest hospital services.
You will be a visible, trusted clinical presence on the Acute Medical Unit and in the Emergency Department. This is where patients arrive acutely unwell, decisions are made quickly, and a pharmacist's input can change outcomes. You will optimise medicines from the moment patients are admitted, through to a safe and seamless discharge. You will use your clinical judgement in complex, fast-moving situations, working closely with senior medical and nursing colleagues who value your expertise.
We want a motivated, enthusiastic pharmacist who enjoys variety and pace, thinks clearly under pressure, and cares about getting medicines right for patients. You will have post-registration hospital experience across a range of specialties, and you will have completed (or be within six months of completing) a postgraduate clinical pharmacy qualification. If you're willing to work towards independent prescribing, we will support you to get there.
Develop your clinical expertise. Gain specialist experience in acute medicine, therapeutic drug monitoring, antimicrobial stewardship and managing complex regimens in critically ill patients.
Grow as a leader. You will support and mentor rotational and junior pharmacists, supervise trainee pharmacists, direct pharmacy technicians, and help shape the future of the service.
Progress your prescribing practice. Once qualified, you can prescribe as an Independent Prescriber for agreed patients.
Make your mark. Contribute to new protocols, guidelines, Patient Group Directions and integrated care pathways, working with our electronic prescribing system (PICS) and the pharmacy electronic prescribing team.
Be part of something bigger. Lead audits and practice research, present and publish your work, and build regional and national links with other centres.
Work across boundaries. Collaborate with primary and community care colleagues to improve patient transitions.
Invest in your future. Benefit from a supportive pharmacy team, structured teaching and training, and dedicated support for your CPD.
You will take part in the clinical and dispensary rota, including weekends, bank holidays and the out-of-hours service. This gives you broad, rounded experience across the department.
At UHB, our vision is building healthier lives, and our values of Kind, Connected and Bold guide everything we do. If you want a role where you can make a real difference to patients, develop as a clinician and leader.
This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
Applicants must have current UK professional registration. For further information please see NHS Careers website (opens in a new window).
