The role

About us

UCL is a world-leading research-intensive university, consistently ranked among the best universities globally. Our Research and Innovation Services (RIS) directorate plays a vital role in supporting UCL's research community, providing specialist expertise across research funding, contracts, compliance and the wider research and innovation lifecycle.

The Planning, Insight and Improvement team works across RIS to strengthen research support services, drive continuous improvement and embed evidence-based decision-making. Through high-quality data, analysis and insight, the team helps ensure that UCL's research and innovation activities are supported by effective, consistent and sustainable services.

About the role

We are seeking a Data Analyst to join our Planning, Insight and Improvement team within Research and Innovation Services.

This role offers an opportunity to use data and analytics to inform strategic and operational decision-making across UCL's research and innovation activities. Working closely with colleagues across RIS, the postholder will analyse complex datasets, identify trends and opportunities for improvement, and translate findings into meaningful insights that support planning, performance monitoring and service delivery.

Key responsibilities include extracting, transforming and validating data from multiple systems; developing and maintaining dashboards and management information reports; and analysing performance across research funding, contracts, compliance and financial activities.

The role will also involve working with stakeholders to understand reporting requirements, improve data quality and governance, and develop effective approaches to data visualisation and reporting.

Reporting to the Assistant Director, Planning, Insight & Improvement (Data & Insight), the successful candidate will contribute to UCL's wider Data & Insight Community of Practice, sharing knowledge and supporting the development of analytical capability across the institution.

About you

We are looking for an analytical and collaborative individual with experience of working with complex datasets and translating data into clear, actionable insights.

The successful candidate will have a degree or equivalent professional experience, ideally with a strong mathematical or statistical component, alongside knowledge of data management and processing using SQL, Snowflake, SAS or equivalent technologies.

Experience of designing and developing dashboards, reporting tools and performance metrics is essential, together with knowledge of R or Python for analytics, natural language processing and data quality. Proficiency in data visualisation and management information tools such as Power BI, Tableau or similar is also important.

Strong analytical skills, including experience of statistical methods, exploratory data analysis and data validation, will be complemented by the ability to communicate complex information clearly to a range of audiences.

Excellent communication and stakeholder engagement skills are essential, alongside a collaborative approach to working with colleagues across different teams and disciplines.

Experience within higher education or research support environments, together with project management skills and an understanding of how data can inform service improvements, would be advantageous.

Our commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

As London's Global University, we know diversity fosters creativity and innovation, and we want our community to represent the diversity of the world's talent. We are committed to equality of opportunity, to being fair and inclusive, and to being a place where we all belong.

We therefore particularly encourage applications from candidates who are likely to be underrepresented in UCL's workforce.

These include people from Black, Asian and ethnic minority backgrounds; disabled people; LGBTQI+ people; and for our Grade 9 and 10 roles, women.
