The role
BSS, part of Travis Perkins plc, are now hiring for an exceptional Balance Sheet Accountant to join our finance team and play a pivotal role in ensuring the accuracy and integrity of our financial statements.
This is far more than a traditional reporting role. You'll be a trusted partner across the finance department, a proactive problem solver and a key contributor to driving modern systems and process improvements across a complex multi-company group. If you're a detail oriented, technically strong accountant who thrives on maintaining robust controls, collaborating with diverse stakeholders and utilising technology to optimise performance, we'd love to hear from you.
The Opportunity
As Balance Sheet Accountant, reporting into the Finance Manager, you will hold a critical role in ensuring the complete accuracy of BSS financial statements.
You will have reporting responsibilities that span across multiple business entities, including BSS, TF Solutions and BSS Ireland. Working within a dynamic central function, you will act as the absolute go to expert for balance sheet queries, ensuring our month end timelines are seamlessly met while actively collaborating on innovative projects like implementing AI to improve our reconciliation workflows.
Working Pattern
This hybrid position will require 3 days per week working at our BSS Crosspoint branch based in Coventry.
What You'll Be Doing
Month-End Close: Supporting the month-end close process to ensure accounts for all three businesses are produced accurately and on time.
Variance Analysis: Analysing balance sheet variances, providing commentary on movements and investigating root causes to resolve reconciliation issues.
Systems Optimisation: Working with the Kerridge systems team to drive ERP improvements that make account reconciliation smoother and more precise.
Controls & Governance: Maintaining robust internal controls and ensuring complete, audit-ready documentation for all balance sheet accounts.
Audit Management: Assisting with year-end audit preparation by providing clean schedules and support to external auditors.
Process Improvement: Collaborating with the wider finance team and the systems accountant to identify reporting improvements and implement AI within reconciliation processes.
Stakeholder Reporting: Ensuring timely reporting to key stakeholders, including preparing board packs and attending Regional Director meetings.
Subject Matter Expertise: Acting as the primary point of contact for balance sheet queries and partnering with the Finance Manager to elevate systems across the group.
About You
You'll be a proactive, analytical accountant who combines strong technical financial accounting experience with excellent problem-solving and stakeholder engagement skills.
Essential
Part-qualified or newly qualified CIMA, ACA, or ACCA accountant.
Strong background in financial accounting and month-end processes.
Advanced Excel skills coupled with a high attention to detail.
Clear understanding of accounting standards, accounting processes, and audit requirements.
Very strong stakeholder engagement skills and a proactive approach to problem-solving.
We'd Particularly Like to See
Experience working in a central role across a multi-company group with differing systems and processes.
Practical knowledge or experience with Kerridge Finance systems.
Why Join Us?
This is a highly visible role with significant reach across the finance function. You'll have the opportunity to:
Take complete ownership of balance sheet integrity across three distinct business entities.
Gain exposure to forward thinking tech initiatives, including automation and AI integration projects.
Drive meaningful process improvements that directly modernise how we manage financial controls.
Progress your career within BSS and the wider Travis Perkins Group.
