Lead from the front, raise the standard and help keep one of Somerset's most extraordinary estates safe, compliant and running at its best.
Our Facilities & Compliance Manager
This is a great opportunity to join the dynamic Engineering team at The Newt in Somerset, taking ownership of the estate's buildings, hard facilities and statutory compliance across all our sites. Leading our Maintenance and Technical teams, you'll make sure everything from LOLER, PUWER and fire safety to pressure systems, electrical and gas safety, water hygiene and asbestos is managed to the highest standard. Working closely with our Planner through Infraspeak and SFG20, you'll ensure inspections and planned maintenance happen on time, remedial actions are closed out and records remain audit-ready. Collaborating with operational teams, Health & Safety, the wider Engineering team and specialist contractors, you'll play a vital role in keeping our hotels, visitor attractions and food production sites safe, compliant, reliable and exceptionally well maintained.
Key Responsibilities
- Lead, recruit and develop the Maintenance team while providing technical leadership and ensuring consistently high standards of work.
- Oversee the Technical team through the Technical Supervisor, ensuring electrical, gas and plumbing work is safe, competent and correctly certified.
- Own the estate's statutory compliance register, ensuring inspections, testing and certification are planned, completed and accurately recorded.
- Manage the estate's building fabric and hard facilities, keeping assets safe, well maintained and fit for purpose.
- Work with the Planner to coordinate planned and reactive maintenance through Infraspeak, minimising disruption across hotel, production and visitor operations.
- Manage specialist compliance contractors, including RAMS, permits to work, access, work quality and certification.
- Ensure remedial actions from inspections, audits and fire risk assessments are prioritised, recorded and closed out promptly.
- Maintain audit-ready compliance records, monitor KPIs and escalate significant defects, overdue inspections or non-compliance when required.
What we can offer
- A positive workplace environment with opportunities to develop both personally and professionally.
- Peace of mind with Employee Life Cover, providing your nominated loved one with 2x your salary.
- Support from our Employee Assistance Programme, including unlimited 24/7 remote GP appointments for you and your family.
- Look after your wellbeing with complimentary access to our Spa and swimming pools and our exclusive benefit of 50% off Spa Treatments.
- Stay in shape with complimentary use of our gym and wellbeing classes.
- Access to our Cycle to Work scheme, supporting wellbeing and sustainable commuting.
- Complimentary staff meal when onsite - crafted by our dedicated kitchen team, often featuring fresh produce from our estate.
- Enjoy shopping in both our shops on estate and online with 30% discount for all our colleagues and free delivery for any online purchases.
- Complimentary garden membership for The Newt and our partner gardens, including the Eden Project, Kew Gardens and The Lost Gardens of Heligan.
- We value your hard work and recognise your achievements through our colleague recognition programme - Newt Awards, with the opportunity to achieve amazing rewards, including a complimentary Hotel Stay.
- Discover exclusive perks with discounted hotel stays for staff, accompanied by a 30% discount at our restaurants.
- A team that knows how to have fun with regular team engagement activities, including Fun Squad events.
- Up to 30 days annual leave each year for our full-time team.
What we're looking for
- Qualified and time-served in at least one engineering discipline, such as Electrical, Mechanical, Plumbing & Heating, Refrigeration or HVAC.
- Proven experience managing facilities, maintenance or compliance across multiple sites.
- Strong working knowledge of UK statutory compliance, including LOLER, PUWER, fire safety, PSSR, legionella, asbestos, electrical and gas safety.
- Experience leading and developing multi-trade maintenance and technical teams, including working through supervisors.
- Confident managing specialist contractors, RAMS and permit-to-work systems.
- Strong knowledge of CMMS systems and compliance record keeping; knowledge of Infraspeak and SFG20 would be advantageous.
- A calm, practical and decisive leader with excellent organisation, attention to detail and communication skills.
- IOSH Managing Safely or equivalent; additional qualifications such as NEBOSH, IWFM Level 4, Legionella Responsible Person, Asbestos Duty to Manage or an HNC/HND/degree in Engineering would be advantageous.
Where you'll be working
The Engineering Department looks after the Company's assets (Buildings, IT Infrastructure and Exhibit Technology, Mechanical plant, Water systems, Food production equipment and Vehicles), conducting scheduled checks and preventive maintenance in all areas of the estate. Engineering also responds to guest requests should they have issues and to colleague requests from across the estate.
