The role
The role
We are looking for a Manager/Senior Manager to join our Tax Dispute Resolution team and become part of a growing specialist offering focused on helping clients manage disputes and interactions with HMRC.
What you'll do
This is an opportunity to work alongside partners and tax specialists across the firm, supporting a diverse range of clients through enquiries, investigations, disclosures and other contentious tax matters. The successful applicant will be responsible for managing tax dispute matters from initial engagement through to resolution, delivering high-quality advice and practical outcomes for clients.
As a key member of the team, you will advise a broad range of clients, including high-net-worth individuals, entrepreneurs, family businesses, private companies, landed estates and internationally connected clients. You will work closely with partners and directors in delivering tax dispute and investigation services, while also contributing to the continued development and growth of the Tax Dispute Resolution offering.
The responsibilities
The role offers varied and interesting work, combining technical advisory work, client relationship management and business development activity.
• Managing a portfolio of tax dispute and investigation matters.
• Leading HMRC enquiries across a range of direct taxes, including income tax, capital gains tax, corporation tax and inheritance tax.
• Supporting clients through HMRC reviews, enquiries and investigations.
• Managing voluntary disclosures and regularisation matters.
• Assisting with Code of Practice 8 and Code of Practice 9 investigations.
• Preparing technical analyses, disclosures, correspondence and representations to HMRC.
• Developing dispute resolution strategies and supporting settlement negotiations.
• Supporting partners and directors on complex technical and contentious tax matters.
• Working alongside legal advisers and counsel where matters progress towards litigation or Tribunal proceedings.
• Acting as the primary point of contact for clients and maintaining strong, trusted relationships throughout often complex and sensitive matters.
• Liaising with colleagues across the wider tax practice and other service lines to deliver joined-up solutions for clients.
• Identifying opportunities where clients may benefit from additional services and escalating these appropriately.
• Supporting business development initiatives, client proposals and thought leadership activity.
• Contributing to the development of internal processes, technical resources and best practice within the team.
• Building strong referral networks across offices, sectors and service lines.
• Supporting, coaching and developing more junior members of the team where appropriate.
The team
The Tax Dispute Resolution team is a growing specialist team focused on supporting clients through HMRC enquiries, investigations, disclosures and other tax disputes.
Working closely with partners and specialists across the wider tax practice, the team advises a broad range of private clients, businesses and their stakeholders. The team works across multiple sectors and service lines, providing practical and commercially focused support on both routine and complex tax disputes.
You
The successful applicant will be:
• CTA or HMRC qualified (TSP, TPDP or predecessor).
• Experience dealing with HMRC enquiries, investigations and disclosures.
• Strong technical knowledge of UK direct taxes.
• Experience managing client relationships and delivering high-quality client service.
• Experience preparing technical reports, disclosures and written advice.
• Confident in building strong relationships with clients and colleagues at all levels, with a clear understanding of client needs and expectations.
• Commercially aware and capable of delivering practical solutions in complex and often sensitive situations.
• Technically strong, highly organised and able to manage multiple assignments and deadlines effectively.
• An excellent communicator, capable of explaining complex technical matters clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
• Self-motivated, pragmatic and proactive, with a positive and professional approach to their work.
• Interested in contributing to the development of a growing specialist offering and building a strong network across the wider firm.
