The role

Every year, thousands of people from across the UK, Realms and Commonwealth write to Their Majesties. They share personal experiences, mark significant milestones and express their views on issues that matter to them. The Royal Correspondence team ensures that these interactions are handled with care, professionalism and sound judgement.

As Head of Royal Correspondence and Services, you’ll lead an important and highly visible area of the Royal Household’s work. While correspondence will be your principal focus, you’ll also oversee the team that helps people celebrate landmark anniversaries and support the effective operation of the wider Private Secretary’s Office.

This is a distinctive opportunity for an accomplished person and operational leader. You’ll lead experienced teams, build on their strengths and shape how these important services develop for the future, while maintaining the quality and personal care that underpin their work.

  • Oversee the delivery of correspondence, ensuring communications are handled accurately, sensitively and efficiently, and routed appropriately across the Royal Household.
  • Working closely with Private Offices, Communications teams, records and archives and other colleagues, use data and insight to identify and share significant themes, public sentiment and emerging issues.
  • Through regular reporting, monitor performance, anticipate demand and improve systems, processes and ways of working, including preparing for major annual events and periods of increased activity.
  • Ensure everyday compliance with data management standards, safeguarding, information security and governance requirements within the line management teams  and give support for these areas across the wider department when required.
  • Lead on agreed operational and IT projects and changes, ensuring improvements are practical, well managed and embedded effectively.

Essential Criteria

  • You'll have substantial experience in a related role, leading operational teams and delivering high-quality services, with a proven track record of managing performance, resources and service delivery standards.
  • An experienced people leader, you'll be skilled in developing high-performing teams, managing change effectively and creating an inclusive environment where colleagues can thrive.
  • You'll bring strong project management and continuous improvement experience, with the ability to review business processes and successfully implement change.
  • A confident communicator and relationship builder, you'll be comfortable engaging and influencing senior stakeholders, colleagues and external partners across a complex organisation.
  • You'll have experience using systems, data and insights to inform decision-making, improve operational performance and enhance stakeholder engagement.
  • Highly organised and resilient, you'll be able to balance competing priorities, deliver at pace and exercise sound judgement within a fast-moving and high-profile environment.
