About the company & team
Want to be the go-to HR expert in a firm where your work is seen and valued? This is a chance to make a role your own in a small team at one of the UK’s largest independent investment management firms.
As our HR Advisor, you’ll be the first point of contact for people advice across the firm. Reporting to the HR Manager, you’ll give managers trusted, pragmatic advice, manage the day-to-day running of the employee lifecycle and help managers handle people issues early and with confidence. You’ll play a key part in strengthening how HR supports the firm through the next stage of our five-year plan.
This is a varied, hands-on generalist role. Our employee relations caseload is generally low in volume but varies in complexity, so you’ll handle cases from start to finish with the support of the HR Manager on the most complex matters. You’ll also support and guide our HR Administrator, look for ways to make our HR processes simpler and better, and turn people data into insight that helps the business make good decisions.
Further details about the role can be found in the job description attached to this advert.
Your focus will be on building strong foundations: getting to know our people and managers, and making sure our core HR services run smoothly and reliably. This will include:
- Advising managers on ER matters, and managing cases from investigation through to outcome.
- Making sure the employee lifecycle, from onboarding through to leavers, runs smoothly and accurately.
- Coaching line managers and delivering training to build their confidence in managing people.
- Producing monthly people reporting that highlights trends, risks and recommended actions.
- Guiding and supporting our HR Administrator, and providing cover when needed.
- Reviewing our HR processes, policies and systems, and suggesting practical improvements.
You’ll join our small, close-knit HR team of three, working closely with the HR Manager and HR Administrator. No two days are the same, and you’ll have real ownership of your work. In a team this size, your ideas will be heard and your impact will be visible across the firm.
Qualifications, Experience & Knowledge
- Proven experience as an HR Advisor or in a similar generalist HR role, working with a good degree of independence.
- Experience of managing ER cases end to end, including disciplinary, grievance, capability and absence.
- Sound, up-to-date knowledge of UK employment law, applied pragmatically and proportionately.
- Experience of reporting on HR metrics and turning data into practical recommendations.
- CIPD Level 5 qualified.
- Experience in financial services or another FCA-regulated environment.
- Experience of supporting or guiding junior HR colleagues.
- Pragmatic – gives clear, balanced advice that weighs fairness, risk and business needs.
- Trusted and Discreet – builds credibility with managers at all levels and handles sensitive matters with confidentiality.
- Coaching Mindset – helps managers build the confidence to handle people issues themselves.
- Proactive – spots issues early and looks for practical ways to improve how we work.
- Organised and Detail-Oriented – prioritises effectively and keeps records, documentation and HR data accurate and compliant.
- Collaborative – enjoys being part of a small, supportive team and working with colleagues across the firm.
As our HR function develops a more proactive approach to supporting the business, the foundations you build will be central to that. Once our core services are running well, you’ll have the opportunity to get involved in a wider range of people initiatives and to put your own stamp on how HR operates.
