Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Specialty Doctor in Oncology at the Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust. The post holder will join the Oncology Department. The main focuses of the post are:

  • To provide continuity of care for in-patients on the Oncology Ward
  • To provide rapid review of patients presenting via the Oncology Triage Unit with symptoms of their cancer or consequences of treatment
  • To ensure the delivery of excellent Oncology care to in-patients on the Oncology Ward, by working closely with the Trust outreach Oncology Services
  • To work with the ward FY3 doctor to provide continuity of care on the ward for the patients

This post is suitable for a capable enthusiastic doctor with full GMC registration and an MRCP or MRCGP qualification or equivalent who is keen to join a dynamic team. The applicant should have experience in oncology, primary care or other related specialties. It offers an opportunity for a doctor to develop a career in oncology as a Specialty Doctor.

Candidates are invited to contact Dr Mark Tuthill, (Consultant Oncologist), Churchill Hospital, Oxford University Hospitals NHS Trust (mark.tuthill@ouh.nhs.uk).

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work in conjunction with the existing FY2/IMT trainees, the Oncology ward FY3 doctor, alongside the Oncology Registrar on-call, and under the guidance of Oncology Consultants. We expect the post holder to manage the day-to-day medical care of Oncology patients on the ward and will be expected to review patients independently some of the time. There are twice daily handovers, the Oncology Consultant on-call is available throughout each shift and there will be a scheduled post-take Consultant-led ward round each afternoon. It is important that the post holder liaises closely with ward-based nurses, the Oncology Triage Service and the Trust's Palliative Care Team.
