The role

Personal Lines Segment Underwriter

  • Help identify and assess opportunities to expand NFU Mutual's Personal Lines offering across new and existing customer segments and products, on a 12-month fixed-term contract basis

  • Use underwriting expertise, market insight and portfolio analysis to shape evidence-based recommendations for sustainable, profitable growth

  • Hybrid working on offer. Spend up to 80% of your time at home to achieve an excellent work-life balance, with 20% attendance at one of our offices: Stratford-upon-Avon, York, Bristol, Belfast or Glasgow

About the role

This is an exciting opportunity to join NFU Mutual's Head Office Underwriting Department in a specialist Personal Lines role with a clear expansion and project focus.

Over a 12-month period, you'll help assess opportunities to grow and develop our Personal Lines offering, considering both new and existing customer segments and potential product opportunities. Reporting to the Underwriting Segment Manager, you'll combine technical underwriting knowledge with customer, market and portfolio insight to identify where NFU Mutual could support sustainable, profitable growth while continuing to manage insurance risk effectively.

You'll undertake market and customer-segment analysis, drawing together internal data, portfolio performance information, external market insight and competitor intelligence. You'll use this evidence to assess the size, suitability and commercial potential of different opportunities, identify key underwriting considerations and develop clear recommendations for senior stakeholders.

Working closely with colleagues across Underwriting, Pricing, Product, Propositions, Sales, Agency, Claims, Regions and Marketing, you'll test potential opportunities, understand delivery dependencies and help build support for recommended next steps. You'll develop practical options that clearly explain the customer, underwriting, financial and operational implications associated with proposed changes.

Where opportunities are progressed, you'll contribute to the development of the underwriting strategy, risk appetite, rules, processes and communications required to deliver them effectively. This will include considering where existing appetite could be refined, working with Pricing to understand competitiveness and expected performance, and translating underwriting recommendations into clear and workable guidance for Agents and Underwriters.

You'll take ownership of defined expansion activity and short-term project deliverables, progressing agreed work to the required standards and outcomes. Alongside this project focus, you'll apply independent underwriting expertise and judgement to support effective insurance risk management, fair customer outcomes and the continual development of underwriting knowledge and capability across the business.

This role will be offered on a 12-month fixed term contract basis and will be known internally as: Class Underwriter - Segment.

About you

You'll bring strong Personal Lines underwriting experience alongside the commercial awareness and analytical capability to explore new markets, customer segments or product opportunities. You understand how underwriting strategy, risk appetite, pricing, customer needs and operational delivery come together, and you can use that understanding to assess whether an opportunity is both attractive and deliverable.

Naturally inquisitive and comfortable working with ambiguity, you can draw together complex information from multiple sources, identify the most important considerations and turn your analysis into practical, evidence-based recommendations. You'll be confident challenging assumptions, exploring different options and applying sound independent judgement where information is incomplete or competing priorities need to be balanced.

You'll also be an effective communicator and confident report writer who can make complex technical information accessible to different audiences. Your collaborative approach and stakeholder-management skills will allow you to build trusted relationships across technical and non-technical teams, test emerging ideas and influence decisions.

So, in short, what we're looking for...

  • Strong Personal Lines underwriting experience, supported by sound general insurance knowledge

  • Experience contributing to underwriting strategy, risk appetite, risk selection, underwriting rules or risk-acceptance criteria

  • The ability to analyse portfolio performance, market information and customer-segment data to identify and assess potential opportunities

  • Experience translating complex evidence into clear, well-structured reports and actionable recommendations

  • The ability to assess the customer, commercial, underwriting and operational implications of proposed product or proposition changes

  • An understanding of addressable-market and opportunity assessment, including how customer needs, market potential and portfolio fit inform decision-making

  • Experience working collaboratively across functions such as Underwriting, Pricing, Product, Propositions, Sales or Marketing to shape or progress change

  • Strong external market awareness, with the ability to use competitor and wider industry insight to inform recommendations

  • Effective communication, stakeholder-management and influencing skills, with the confidence to constructively challenge and build support for proposed activity

  • Strategic and critical thinking skills, alongside a practical approach to problem-solving and delivery

  • A clear customer focus, with the ability to balance fair customer outcomes, growth opportunities and effective insurance risk management
