The role

We're looking for a digitally driven News Editor to lead a local newsroom and help shape compelling journalism across our websites and print titles.
This is a great opportunity for an experienced news editor, but we're equally keen to hear from an ambitious Senior Reporter who is ready to take the next step into newsroom leadership.
You'll lead a small team of journalists, setting the news agenda and making sure we're producing strong, engaging local journalism that connects with our audiences. Digital will be at the heart of the role, so we're looking for someone who understands what makes a great online story and can bring energy, ideas and audience focus to a busy newsroom.
The role will have responsibility across a couple of print titles and websites, while also providing broader editorial support across the portfolio.
Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and motivate a small team of journalists, helping them produce high-quality, engaging local journalism.
  • Drive a digital-first news agenda, identifying stories and opportunities that will engage and grow our online audiences.
  • Oversee the day-to-day news operation across both digital and print platforms.
  • Plan coverage, allocate stories and ensure the newsroom responds quickly to breaking and developing news.
  • Support reporters with story development, headlines, presentation and digital storytelling.
  • Maintain high editorial standards across everything we publish.
  • Build strong relationships within the communities we serve and ensure our journalism reflects the issues that matter locally.
  • Provide wider editorial support and leadership across other titles when required.
Skills & Expertise
  • NCTJ-qualified, with a strong grounding in media law and journalistic standards.
  • Experience working in a local newsroom, with a strong understanding of what makes compelling local journalism.
  • A digitally focused journalist who understands how audiences discover, consume and engage with news online.
  • Strong news judgement and the ability to spot stories with real audience potential.
  • Previous editing or newsroom leadership experience would be valuable, but this could equally suit an ambitious Senior Reporter looking for their first step into an editor role.
  • Confident supporting, developing and motivating other journalists.
  • Comfortable working across digital and print while putting audience growth and digital journalism at the centre of the newsroom.
  • Organised, energetic and able to make good editorial decisions in a fast-moving news environment.
