What we're looking for

First and foremost, we're looking for a qualified Train Driver with significant operational railway experience and a strong understanding of safe train operations.

Applicants will need a valid Train Driver Certificate of Competence and Safety Critical Work Licence, with current Rules and Regulations competence, alongside at least four years' train driving experience.

A strong understanding of railway operational standards, risk management and Safety Management Systems is essential, together with practical experience across safety critical railway operations. Experience of operational auditing, assurance, risk assessment and accident or incident investigation will also be important.

You'll need a Competence Assessor qualification such as A1, TAQA or equivalent, alongside an Internal Verifier qualification such as V1 or D34, or demonstrable experience of competence assurance activities. PTS qualification is also required.

This is a role that works with colleagues and stakeholders at every level, so strong communication, influencing and relationship building skills are essential. We're also looking for someone comfortable analysing operational information, identifying trends and translating findings into clear reports and practical improvements.

Nice to have

Experience of RM3 assurance, Human Factors, Signal Sighting, EDS or similar competence management systems and working with organisations such as Network Rail, HMRI or RAIB would be advantageous.

Lead Auditor or Lead Investigator qualifications would also be beneficial, as would membership of, or a willingness to work towards membership of, a relevant professional body such as IOSH, IIRSM, CMIOSH or MIRO.

Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check
At LNER, safety is our top priority. If your application is successful and you're new to the business, we'll carry out a basic DBS check as part of our pre-employment process. This is only takes place once a conditional job offer has been made. The DBS check looks for any unspent convictions and conditional cautions under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (ROA) 1974. If there's evidence of an unspent conviction or a conditional caution, the details of these will be reviewed internally by a cross functional panel on a case-by-case basis before a final offer of employment is confirmed. Please note that in some cases, this may result in an offer being withdrawn. Further information on how we collect and use this data is available on our privacy notice.

For safety-critical roles, a safety-critical medical will also be required. Our Talent Team will be on hand to guide you through the process and will send you a medical questionnaire by email. Once complete, this will go directly to our in-house Health and Wellbeing team who will contact you to arrange a convenient location, date and time for your medical appointment. We currently have clinics in Kings Cross, Doncaster, Newcastle and Edinburgh. The sooner we can do it, the better, so please try to be flexible with your availability. Regional Operations Risk and Assurance Manager

This is a senior operational safety leadership role with a real opportunity to influence how we manage risk, assurance and operational standards across LNER.

Reporting to the Operations Standards & Delivery Manager, the Regional Operations Risk and Assurance Manager will provide independent oversight and assurance across a designated region, helping to make sure our operational activities remain safe, compliant and continuously improving.

Working closely with Operations Delivery, Safety & Sustainability, Network Rail and wider industry partners, the role will lead on operational risk, competence assurance, standards governance, investigations and safety assurance, while helping us continue to strengthen our safety culture across LNER.

So, what exactly does our Regional Operations Risk and Assurance Manager do?

At its heart, this role is about making sure our operational standards and safety arrangements are robust, effective and consistently applied.

As the regional operational safety and assurance lead, you'll provide expert guidance across Train Driver operations, Train Working, Dispatch and wider operational activities. This includes maintaining Regional and Depot Safety Plans, leading operational risk assessments and supporting the development of our Driver Safety Plan.

A key part of the role is providing independent assurance across our operational locations. This will include leading RM3 and operational audits, reviewing Safety Management System processes, identifying emerging risks and trends, and making sure learning and improvement actions are embedded.

The role also has an important focus on competence. You'll assess and assure Driver Competent Managers, Operations Delivery Managers and others responsible for operational competence, while coaching and supporting managers to maintain consistently high standards.

Alongside this, the role will lead and support formal investigations, coordinate regional Signal Sighting activity and apply Human Factors principles to help identify hazards and reduce operational risk.

As a senior operational safety representative, you'll also work closely with Network Rail and industry and regulatory bodies, supporting audits, investigations and reviews and deputising for the Operations Standards & Delivery Manager where required.

The role also provides on call Silver Strategic operational and safety oversight.
