As a key member of the team, you will play an important role in supporting financial planning, budget management and financial governance, whilst helping to shape financial decision-making across a range of services.

Reporting to the Finance Manager, you will provide high-quality financial support and advice to budget holders, spend managers and senior officers across the Directorate.

You will contribute to the delivery of robust financial management across revenue and capital budgets, providing financial intelligence and analysis to support effective decision-making. You will also help maintain a strong financial control environment, ensuring compliance with financial regulations, accounting standards and corporate policies.

As a Senior Finance Technician, you will:

  • Support budget preparation, budget monitoring and final accounts processes.
  • Provide financial analysis, forecasting and modelling to support service delivery and strategic decision-making.
  • Monitor financial performance and challenge budget forecasts where appropriate.
  • Support the identification and delivery of efficiency savings and service improvements.
  • Assist with statutory returns, grant management and financial reporting.
  • Provide advice, guidance and training to managers and colleagues across the Council.
  • Manage and motivate members of the team, supporting their development and performance.
  • Build strong relationships with customers, stakeholders and partners to ensure the effective delivery of financial services.

About You

We are looking for an individual with strong technical and interpersonal skills who can work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

You will have:

  • Excellent numerical and analytical skills with a high level of accuracy.
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to explain complex financial information clearly to a wide range of audiences.
  • Experience of financial planning, budget monitoring and financial reporting.
  • Good organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities.
  • Strong ICT skills, including Microsoft 365 and financial systems.
  • The ability to build positive working relationships and provide trusted financial advice.
  • Experience of supporting, supervising or managing staff.
  • A proactive approach to identifying efficiencies and driving continuous improvement.

Knowledge of local authority accounting requirements, including the CIPFA Code of Practice and International Financial Reporting Standards (IFRS), would be advantageous.

We appreciate that no candidate will have experience in every aspect of the role from day one. What matters most is a willingness to learn, a proactive approach, and a genuine commitment to developing and succeeding in the role.
