The role

Part Time / 21 Hours Per Week / Permanent

Make a real difference in a role where safety comes first. We're looking for a passionate and proactive Health and Safety Advisor to join our professional HR team, supporting a diverse range of services across the city, including schools and contracted care providers. This is an exciting opportunity to work with colleagues at all levels of the organisation, building strong relationships and influencing a positive culture where health and safety is embedded in everything we do.

As a trusted advisor, you'll provide practical guidance, support and training, helping managers and teams understand and apply health and safety legislation in their day-to-day work. No two days will be the same as you work collaboratively across a wide variety of services, empowering people to create safe environments for employees, residents and service users alike.

This is a truly agile role, combining the flexibility of home working with opportunities to engage directly with services across multiple locations. You'll have flexibility in hybrid working being either office based at City Hall, out on site visits or working remotely from home to suit the needs of the service. However, under our New Ways of Working you'll be required to work from a non-home location a minimum of 2 days (pro rata for part time hours). We're also committed to supporting work-life balance and can be flexible around how the 21 hours per week are worked, in line with service needs and agreed with the successful candidate. Join us and help shape a safer future for everyone who works in and accesses our services.

What you'll be doing

As a Health and Safety Advisor, you'll enjoy a varied and rewarding role supporting a wide range of services across the city. Working as part of a professional team, you'll undertake a programme of health and safety audits, inspections and reviews across council services, schools, academies and private care homes, helping to ensure high standards of compliance and safe working practices are maintained.

You'll provide practical advice, guidance and support to managers and employees, helping them identify risks, implement effective controls and embed a positive health and safety culture within their teams. You'll also design and deliver engaging training sessions, both online and face-to-face, equipping colleagues with the knowledge and confidence to meet their health and safety responsibilities.

Beyond advisory and assurance work, you'll have the opportunity to contribute to a range of corporate initiatives and projects, including health and wellbeing campaigns, consultation forums, work experience programmes and procurement activities. This an excellent opportunity for someone who enjoys building relationships, influencing positive change and making a meaningful impact across a diverse organisation.

What you'll need

We're looking for an experienced health and safety professional who can combine technical expertise with a practical, people-focused approach. You may already hold Chartered Membership of IOSH, or be working towards it with a NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent qualification. However, what matters most is your significant experience in a health and safety role, together with an advanced understanding of health and safety legislation, best practice and emerging industry developments.

You'll be a confident communicator with the ability to build credibility and influence at all levels of the organisation. Whether you're delivering advice, training, presenting findings or producing written reports, you'll be able to communicate complex information clearly and effectively to a range of audiences.

You'll also have experience of carrying out audits, inspections and investigations, using your analytical skills to identify risks, recommend improvements and support positive outcomes. Strong report-writing skills and the ability to produce clear, professional correspondence will be essential, alongside a proactive and collaborative approach to helping services create and maintain safe working environments.

What we can offer you

As well as the satisfaction of helping to improve thousands of lives across Leicester, you can look forward to a work environment that encourages a healthy work/life balance. You'll enjoy generous annual leave, membership of the Local Government Pension Scheme and the option of flexible working. We'll also give you the chance to develop your skills and expertise with a variety of training and development opportunities. In addition, you can choose from a number of flexible benefits, including discounts on city buses and trains.
