What we're looking for

  • The most important experience you will need is your lived experience of drug/alcohol use and being in recovery from this.
  • Be able to empathise with people with living experience.

  • Be keen to join in team activities and be willing to learn new things.
  • Have a positive and enthusiastic approach to our work.
  • Suggest improvements to our area of work, and we would hope that you will feel confident to do this.

The role

We have two spaces for someone with lived experience and first-hand knowledge of drugs and alcohol treatment and recovery services to join our team. They will help to support the projects of the drug and alcohol team in the Public Health Division.

The council has strategic priorities around drug and alcohol prevention, treatment and recovery - including the voice of people with lived experience in all that work is most important.

These roles are unique to the Public Health Division and will ensure that people who use or have used drug and alcohol treatment services are at the heart of our work. There will be the chance to get involved in different areas of our work. We hope to be able to build this around the interests and experiences of the new team member.

What you'll do

A typical day with the team might include joining the rest of the team in face to face or online meetings with our drug and alcohol treatment and recovery service providers. You will be supporting different projects which include things like:

  • harm reduction
  • developing ways for people with lived experience to influence council decision making

  • sharing your ideas

You will work closely with another team member who will be your mentor and give on-the-job support. You will also be introduced to other teams within the Public Health Division. You will bring valuable insight to our work and in turn you will hopefully gain experience and understanding of how drug and alcohol treatment and recovery services are delivered to the people of Leicester.

How you'll work

  • The roles are for 6 months
  • 15 hours per week
  • The team are office based every Wednesday. The new team member will need to be able to work some hours on this day based at City Hall. Other hours can be discussed to suit the new team member.
