About the team

The issues surrounding tax and legal services are constantly evolving, both locally and globally. Our Tax and Law experts are at the forefront of providing a range of specialist tax and legal knowledge and technologies to empower businesses. This is why you'll find KPMG the perfect place for you to build your expertise, progress your career and make your mark.

Our tax professionals have an impact on some of the most pressing global challenges of the day, such as climate change, incentives and transparency. We offer real scale and size in terms of the range of tax solutions we offer clients. Our services span: International Tax, Deal Advisory Tax and Transfer Pricing; Business Taxes, covering advisory, compliance, claims and incentives and transformation; People Taxes, advising on all aspects of employee reward, tax issues arising as a result of having a global workforce as well as advising high-net-worth individuals and entrepreneurial families; and Indirect Taxes.

KPMG has one of the leading Indirect Tax practices in the UK. Our national practice advises clients across Value Added Tax (VAT), Customs Duty and green taxes, supporting organisations including large multinationals, household-name retailers, public sector bodies and financial services businesses. The fast-growing practice brings together approximately 200 professionals across the UK. Within the North of England team, you will join colleagues focused on helping clients navigate varied and complex indirect tax issues.

About the role

We are looking for a commercially minded Indirect Tax Director to help build on the North of England team's success and support its growth ambitions. With a primary focus on VAT, you will combine senior client leadership, business development and technical oversight. The opportunity may suit an established Director seeking a new challenge or a strong Senior Manager ready to step into a Director role, supported by a high-performing team and a broad KPMG network.

What you'll be doing

  • Build trusted relationships with senior stakeholders across existing clients and target organisations.

  • Lead market-facing business development initiatives, identify opportunities and convert them into commercial projects.

  • Pitch for domestic and international work with new and existing clients and help drive sustainable sales growth.

  • Provide insightful, technically credible VAT opinions that connect client business issues with relevant KPMG solutions.

  • Oversee high-quality client deliverables, maintaining a strategic perspective and strong focus on client service.

  • Build an effective internal network across KPMG's wider tax, legal and advisory practices.

  • Engage confidently with senior internal and external stakeholders while collaborating effectively with peers.

  • Inspire, coach and develop junior colleagues, creating an inclusive and respectful team environment.

  • Lead and coordinate complex projects, balancing your own priorities with oversight of the wider team's workload.

Skills, knowledge and experience you'll need

  • Deep VAT knowledge and the ability to review complex technical issues while retaining a strategic, commercial and client-focused perspective.

  • A strong track record of client-facing business development, including identifying opportunities and converting them into commercial projects in consulting or an in-house environment.

  • Credibility and confidence when building relationships and communicating with senior stakeholders, with clear and adaptable written and verbal communication.

  • Experience collaborating with tax specialists, lawyers, finance functions and other stakeholders to deliver joined-up outcomes.

  • Excellent project management and prioritisation skills, with the ability to manage your own workload and provide effective oversight of others.

  • Inclusive and collaborative leadership, with the ability to inspire colleagues and contribute positively to clients and the wider community.

  • Energy, curiosity and enthusiasm for indirect tax, together with a commitment to strengthening KPMG's reputation through the quality of your work, knowledge and experience.
