The role

Company Description

HERlab tackles the innovation-production paradox: much of innovation is held back by bioproduction limitations. We're building future-ready, scalable platforms to make crucial molecules - like therapeutic ingredients or biomaterials - both possible and commercially viable.

Our mission: Unlock the production of molecules once thought impossible - and help replace animals in production and supply chains for a more ethical and sustainable world.

We're a pre-seed biotech startup. We're proud to be female founder-led (with one previous exit) and under the scientific leadership of a distinguished molecular biologist. Our culture values intellectual pursuit, autonomy and trust. Much of our exciting research is still in stealth mode!

Position

Join us as a Bioinformatics Fellow and your mission will be to develop a comparative, data-driven view of intrinsic production capacity across candidate species and outline engineering levers to raise that capacity - using multi-omics approaches. The work is computational.

What you'll do

  • Contribute to comparative multi-omics analysis of selected unconventional microbial species
  • Support development of standardized and reproducible computational workflows
  • Help identify key factors that impact production capacity for various molecules
  • Versioned codebase (Git), containerised workflows, data dictionaries, and a concise report + stakeholder slides
Requirements

You'll excel if you have:

  • A background in bioinformatics/computational genomics (MSc/PhD student or strong BSc).
  • Proficiency in Python or R (pandas/data.table, Biopython/pybedtools or Bioconductor), shell, and Git.
  • Experience with genome QC/annotation metrics and comfort with RNA-seq/proteomics normalization and integration.
  • Familiarity with high-level microbial cell biology (translation, ER/secretory pathway, glycosylation, proteases) would be a plus.
  • Bonus: Snakemake/Nextflow, Docker/Mamba, simple viz (matplotlib/Plotly), and basic literature/NLP mining.

Tooling (indicative):

  • Python/R; Snakemake/Nextflow; Docker/Mamba; standard QC utilities; public fungal genome/omics resources.
  • We provide a starter checklist and schema; no proprietary methods or targets are disclosed.

We welcome candidates whose skills come from experience, not just formal qualifications. This is a fully remote role.

Other information

Stealth project. As part of our commitment to confidentiality, we ask all team members to sign an NDA and IP assignment.

Project duration to be defined with the candidate (3 or 6 months).
