The role

Imperial College London, one of the world's top universities for research and teaching, invites applications for four Assistant Professor positions in the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering. The department is seeking to strengthen and expand its research in selected areas, and is looking for the following:

Assistant Professor in Digital Design or Computer Infrastructure for AI as a member of the Circuits & Systems (CAS) Research Group.

Assistant Professor in Intelligent Systems as a member of the Intelligent Systems (IS) Research Group.

Assistant Professor in Non-Linear Control Theory as a member of the Control and Power (CAP) Research Group.

Assistant Professor in Electromagnetics, RF Systems & Communications as a member of the Communications and Signal Processing (CSP) Research Group.

These roles offer an exciting opportunity to contribute to pioneering research at a globally recognised institution, and in a department with a vibrant, collaborative, and supportive academic environment. The department fosters innovation through interdisciplinary research between its research groups and across the university through Schools of Convergence Science. The department is also widely respected for its excellence in teaching and student support and is committed to broadening participation in engineering.

What we are looking for

Assistant Professor in Digital Design or Computer Infrastructure for AI as a member of the Circuits & Systems (CAS) Group. This group research advances electronic circuits, systems, and sensors across the full stack from ultra-low-power analogue / digital / mixed-signal ICs and intelligent sensing to reconfigurable / FPGA platforms, formal methods for reliable digital design, and novel device and memory technologies for neuromorphic and edge-AI computing. We seek someone to establish an independent research programme in the design of chips and systems for artificial intelligence (AI). We particularly welcome research connecting digital hardware and computer architecture with compilers, runtime software or system-level design and evaluation.

Assistant Professor in Intelligent Systems as a member of the Intelligent Systems (IS) Group. This group operates at the convergence of artificial intelligence, communication theory, machine learning and robotics, functioning as a major computational intelligence hub, to advance the mathematical foundations, algorithm design, and real-world deployment of machine learning. The group's collective expertise spans the entire modern ML pipeline: fundamental learning theory, multimodal data acquisition and feature extraction, online decision-making, causal inference, and neuro-symbolic reasoning. We seek someone with embodied and embedded AI research background and interests, who will explore new frontiers in machine intelligence, with the aim of advancing fundamental understanding of how multimodal sensing, real-time machine learning, and online decision making can be used to enhance the adaptability and robustness of human-centric intelligent systems.

Assistant Professor in Non-Linear Control Theory as a member of the Control and Power (CAP) Group. This group focuses on robust and optimal control, data fusion, nonlinear and distributed-parameter systems, large-scale reduced-order and stochastic modelling, system identification, fault diagnosis, and cyber-secure estimation and control. It has a wide remit across planning and operation of electricity networks and power electronics. We seek someone to research theoretical approaches to non-linear control and add experience of applying non-linear control as the fundamental enabler of high-fidelity digital twins for critical national infrastructure, smart cities, industrial plant-wide processes, medicine and social health, and social economics.

Assistant Professor in Electromagnetics, RF Systems & Communications as a member of the Communications and Signal Processing (CSP) Group. This group advances communication theory, wireless communications, signal and image processing, computer vision, data and information processing and networking, often including machine learning and artificial intelligence. We seek someone who will explore new frontiers in communications and sensing systems, advancing fundamental science and enabling technological breakthroughs. We welcome research driven by scientific curiosity, addressing emerging industrial and societal needs, spanning electromagnetic waves, RF, microwave and millimetre-wave technologies.
