The role

We're looking for a PR & Media Manager to cover the Midlands and North of England on a 12-month fixed-term contract, to raise the profile of the British Heart Foundation (BHF) in support of our lifesaving work.

Responsible for creating awareness of BHF, you'll promote the breadth of our work, from research and campaigning to fundraising, helping to grow support and income.

You'll promote BHF's work, influencing local partners and shaping the charity's reputation through media, and other communication channels.

Working with local teams to devise and deliver impactful communication strategies, you'll meet challenging KPIs and demonstrate significant impact which should raise the public's propensity to give. You'll work across a varied range of media activity, partnering with our UK-wide media team to develop and deliver PR strategies that bring key brand and awareness campaigns to life. You'll also participate in our out of hours service on a rotational shift basis.

Your local expertise will guide the way we influence and use both traditional media, digital channels, and engagement opportunities.

Key priorities:
During the 12-month contract, you'll help deliver a defined programme of work across the following priority areas:

  • Delivering regional media activity for BHF's Christmas and brand campaigns.
  • Planning and delivering regional media activity to support Heart Month 2027.
  • Supporting the promotion and delivery of the Heart Hero Awards 2027.
  • Delivering media activity for BHF's new series of trekking events.

About you

As our ideal candidate, you bring in-depth knowledge of the media landscape in the Midlands and North of England, and demonstrable experience of finding and developing stories for the media, delivering successful communications campaigns, and working collaboratively in a media team.

With strong experience gained as a journalist or in a communications role (either in-house or agency), you have excellent written and verbal communication and presenting skills, the ability to build trust and relationships, and strong creativity in developing campaigns. You can take complicated information and translate it into consumer-friendly communications.

A confident self-starter who enjoys travelling across the UK, you can work under your own initiative as part of a supportive and geographically dispersed team.

Working arrangements

This is a 12-month fixed-term contract, and we are looking for someone to start as soon as possible. The contract will run for 12 months from the agreed start date.

This 12-month fixed term contract has been created to provide additional resource within the Media Team to support a defined period of activity and delivery.

Alongside key deliverables outlined above, you will collaborate with colleagues and stakeholders across the organisation to deliver high-quality media and communications support, strengthen BHF's regional profile and contribute to wider organisational priorities.

As this position has been established to meet a temporary business requirement, it is not intended to form part of the team's permanent structure. The contract is therefore expected to end once the defined programme of work and associated resourcing requirement have concluded.

This is a home-based role with occasional travel across the Midlands and North of England. There will also be a requirement to travel to BHF offices where necessary for team events and meetings.

Standard working hours are 09:00-17:00, Monday to Friday. After probation, you will also take part in an on-call rota on a rotational basis for which you will receive an on-call allowance of £1,000 per annum (pro rata for part-time colleagues).
