The role

We are seeking a Lecturer in Applied Computing to join our Department of Computing at Birmingham City University (BCU) and contribute to our partnership with the Birmingham Institute of Fashion and Creative Arts (BIFCA) in Wuhan, China. Find out more about BIFCA

This is a Flying Faculty role, with the successful candidate required to spend at least one semester in China each academic year as part of the BIFCA teaching team.

The Department of Computing is a vibrant and forward-thinking academic community, committed to delivering an outstanding student experience alongside high-quality research, innovation and meaningful engagement with industry.

As the Department continues to grow, we are investing in our people, programmes and academic provision, creating exciting opportunities for colleagues to contribute to the development of computing education and research. Our teams work across a diverse range of rapidly evolving areas of computing, combining academic expertise with practical, industry-informed approaches to learning and teaching.

We are a practice-focused department, ensuring that our curriculum remains relevant to the changing needs of the digital and technology sectors. Our strong links with industry and external partners span areas including smart cities, healthcare technologies, media production and the Internet of Things (IoT).

Collaboration is central to our approach. We encourage colleagues to work across disciplines, share expertise and develop innovative approaches to teaching, research and knowledge exchange, both within the Department and across the wider University.

In their own words

About the company & team

At Birmingham City University, we are a diverse and inclusive learning community of over 31,400 students from more than 120 countries. We aim to become an exemplar anchor institution, creating and sharing knowledge for a better and more inclusive society. We are committed to providing a transformational educational experience, supporting world-class research, and fostering a collaborative and supportive working environment for our staff.

Recognised as one of the UK's Top 250 employers (Financial Times & Statista), we pride ourselves on being a place where colleagues feel valued, supported, and able to grow their careers while contributing to the success of our students and communities.

Our student demographic reflects the rich cultural and ethnic diversity of Birmingham itself, with a significant proportion of students from minoritised ethnic backgrounds and the majority of our home students coming from the West Midlands. This diversity is a strength, and it calls for a workforce that is equipped to challenge deficit narratives and thinking - those assumptions that position students from underrepresented groups as lacking rather than recognising their assets, strengths and potential.

By embracing this perspective, we aim to create an environment where all students and colleagues can thrive, and where our work contributes positively to the social, cultural and economic life of Birmingham and beyond.
