You can embrace your curiosity in a culture that celebrates new ideas and diverse perspectives. You can experience a world of opportunity and the chance to shape a career as unique as you.
This is an opportunity to play a significant leadership role within WSP's Property & Buildings Portfolio, partnering with senior business leaders to shape strategy, influence performance and drive continual improvement in health and safety outcomes across a complex and growing business.

A little more about your role...

We are seeking a Portfolio Health & Safety Lead to provide strategic H&S leadership across our UK Property & Buildings, P&B, Portfolio.

Acting as the principal H&S partner to the P&B Executive Managing Director, you will work closely with discipline Managing Directors and Operational Directors to ensure that H&S risks, performance and improvement priorities are understood and integrated into business decision-making.

You will lead and coordinate the P&B H&S support model, setting priorities for the Senior H&S Business Partner, H&S Business Partners and H&S Advisors. The role will focus on portfolio strategy, leadership engagement, governance, performance and assurance, rather than routine advisory or technical delivery.

You will:

  • Develop and oversee the P&B H&S strategy and annual improvement plan.
  • Advise and constructively challenge the Executive MD, discipline MDs and ODs on H&S risk, performance, opportunities and leadership.
  • Provide the Executive MD with a consolidated view of portfolio H&S performance, significant risks and emerging issues.
  • Ensure portfolio priorities are translated into proportionate discipline-level objectives and actions.
  • Lead the H&S contribution to portfolio and discipline leadership meetings.
  • Oversee portfolio H&S reporting, using incident, assurance and performance data to identify trends and improvement priorities.
  • Set the direction and priorities for the P&B H&S team, ensuring resources are deployed according to risk and business need.
  • Oversee a risk-based assurance programme covering project safety, CDM, fatal risks and other priority areas.
  • Provide senior oversight of significant and high-potential incidents, including investigation quality, learning and action close-out.
  • Promote visible H&S leadership and the sharing of lessons and good practice across P&B.
  • Represent P&B within the wider UK&I HSEQ function and relevant governance forums.
  • Provide senior H&S input to strategic projects, major bids and significant business change.

Detailed delivery activities, including site visits, audits, RAMS reviews, incident tracking and routine advice, will normally be undertaken by the Senior H&S Business Partner, H&S Business Partners and H&S Advisors.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate

  • Significant experience in a senior H&S leadership or business-partnering role within a complex, project-led organisation.
  • Experience of advising Executive Directors, Managing Directors and Operational Directors.
  • Strong knowledge of the UK health and safety regulatory framework, including practical understanding of CDM and the Building Safety Act.
  • A recognised Level 6 H&S qualification, such as the NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent.
  • Chartered membership of IOSH, or demonstrable progress towards Chartered status.
  • Experience of developing H&S strategies, improvement plans and risk-based assurance programmes.
  • The ability to analyse complex information and present clear recommendations to senior leaders.
  • Experience of leading or coordinating H&S professionals across multiple disciplines or business areas.
  • Strong influencing, communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • A pragmatic approach that supports both effective risk management and successful project delivery.
  • Willingness to travel regularly throughout the UK and Ireland.

Key relationships

  • P&B Executive Managing Director.
  • P&B discipline Managing Directors and Operational Directors.
  • UK&I Head of HSEQ and the wider HSEQ team.
  • P&B Senior H&S Business Partner, H&S Business Partners and H&S Advisors.
  • Discipline leaders, project directors and operational teams.
