The role

The Anatomy Demonstrator contributes to and supports the delivery of the MBChB programme at The University of Sheffield. Students from The School of Medicine and Population Health undertake practical anatomy classes as part of their study of human anatomy. The practical anatomy classes take place on Mondays and Tuesdays in Term Time and have a significant clinical element, meaning that clinical experience is considered highly beneficial for this post.

A key role of the post is the facilitation of high-quality educational activities in human anatomy to help ensure the overall quality of the programme. You will operate within the regulations stipulated by the Human Tissue Authority and the health and safety policies that apply to the Medical Teaching Unit.

What you'll do

The main duties and responsibilities of the role encompass undergraduate anatomical education. Human anatomy at the University of Sheffield is taught to first-year medical students using a variety of methods and resources, and the post holder will be required to contribute to facilitating teaching across all aspects. The anatomical regions covered during the first year of the MBChB and MPAS programmes are cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal and hepatobiliary, neuroanatomy, genitourinary and musculoskeletal anatomy.

  • Advise on future resource requirements for anatomy teaching.

How you'll work

Part-time 20% Full-time Equivalent

Main duties and responsibilities

  • Deliver anatomy teaching within the Medical Teaching Unit (MTU) in the Faculty of Health at undergraduate level.
  • Facilitation of small group learning and supporting students in completing pre-written questions and learning activities, using a variety of teaching resources including plastic anatomical models, plastinated human tissue, Anatomage tables, dry skeletal remains, whiteboards and pens, examples of real clinical equipment, video or clinical imaging tutorials. The latter may include footage of real clinical procedures (e.g. endoscopy, surgery, etc.) and imaging includes X-ray, CT and MRI. The post holder will be expected to deliver and narrate these tutorials with guidance and supervision from senior staff.
  • In the near future, ultrasonographic anatomy is likely to complement the available teaching resources. The post holder will be expected to develop their skills in using new teaching resources with guidance and support from senior staff.
  • Plan and prioritise your own daily work, including preparation for the anatomy practical sessions by ensuring you are knowledgeable enough about the subject matter to facilitate the session adequately.
  • Respond promptly to requests and enquiries.
  • You will be required to undertake administrative work in support of the needs of The Medical School and The University of Sheffield.
  • Carry out other duties, commensurate with the grade and remit of the post
