The role

If you're ambitious, curious and enjoy building strong relationships, our Risk & Governance Development Programme provides a structured route into a rewarding career in banking. You'll develop specialist risk management and governance skills, gaining hands-on experience that helps Nationwide identify and manage risk, strengthen controls and support secure, resilient services that deliver positive outcomes for customers and colleagues. Build specialist risk and governance skills through structured learning, professional development and hands-on experience supporting meaningful business outcomes. Choose a career in risk management, helping Nationwide understand and manage risks across technology, suppliers and third-party services. Looking for a rewarding career in banking? Good things this way.

The Risk and Governance Development Programme is a two-year programme, with the next intake commencing in September 2027.

During the programme, you'll join either Third Party Risk or IT Risk Management, helping Nationwide understand and manage risks across technology, suppliers and third-party services.

You'll start with an induction programme before joining a structured learning pathway. You'll learn more about Nationwide, connect with colleagues and build the foundations for your role through risk and governance learning, digital learning, interactive workshops and insight from leaders and industry experts.

Your learning will build your understanding of risk management, governance and controls before you put this into practice within your team. You'll gain hands-on experience supporting real business needs, with guidance from experienced colleagues.

Throughout the two years, you'll develop practical experience in identifying, assessing, monitoring and managing risk. Depending on your placement, this could include technology risk, third-party risk, controls and governance.

You'll use tools such as Microsoft 365 and relevant risk management systems to support analysis, planning, collaboration and accurate record keeping.

No two days are the same. You could support a risk assessment, review information and evidence, help monitor risks and controls, identify potential issues or support governance and reporting. You'll work with colleagues across Nationwide and, where relevant, our suppliers, building confidence in asking questions and constructively challenging where improvements are needed.

You'll develop skills in risk awareness, stakeholder management, communication, problem solving, analysis, planning and prioritisation. You'll also work towards relevant industry-recognised foundational learning.

The programme will give you a strong foundation for a career in risk and governance, with opportunities to continue developing your expertise in areas such as IT risk, third-party risk, controls and governance.

We forge our own path at Nationwide.

As a mutual, we're owned by our members - those customers who bank, save or have a mortgage with us. We challenge the financial sector status quo. If you're inspired by fairer finances, passionate about making a meaningful impact, and truly care about our customers, you're one of us.

At Nationwide, you are challenged to grow and rewarded for doing so. Valued. Recognised. Inspired to be your best. As a community we want our working lives to count. As a team, we celebrate what we achieve. As a standard-setter, we work for the good of customers, communities, and broader society.

We are purpose-driven. Uncompromisingly customer. Unstoppably Nationwide.
