Pay & benefits
What you'll get
Salary: £27,612 per year
Contract Length: Permanent
Working Pattern: You will work 37.5 hours per week. A normal working week is Monday to Friday, 8am to 4pm, but you may be required to work weekends, bank holidays and occasionally with evenings.
The role
We are looking for a warden to help care for the vast upland landscape of the Carneddau and the Glyderau, which extends over 21,000 acres. In this role, you will be a steward for nature conservation and the open air, playing an essential part in the process of ensuring this iconic landscape remains in good condition for wildlife and people, now and in the future.
What you'll do
As a Warden, you will help to protect and care for habitats, wildlife, buildings and machinery. You will ensure that the conservation work and the open air experiences on the land under your care are of the highest quality.
You will focus primarily on delivering practical tasks to maintain and preserve the estate and restore nature across the Carneddau and the Glyderau. From raising fences and dry stone walls to fix gates and stiles, to operating and maintaining machinery such as tractors and chainsaw access for planting trees, no two days will be the same. You will also inspect countryside assets, including bridges, stiles and gates, helping to identify where maintenance or repair work is needed.
Occasionally, you will work alongside educational and volunteer groups to deliver a variety of conservation tasks, such as managing heather and bracken or planting trees. You will pass on your knowledge and passion to encourage others to enjoy this area as much as you do, and whenever and wherever you come across people, you will take the time to chat with them and answer their questions, rather than rushing off to the next task.
What it's like to work here
From day to day, you will be part of the National Trust's Warden team, which is located in Nant Ffrancon near Bethesda. The area you will be working in is breathtaking, but the weather in the mountains can be unpredictable. You will spend a significant amount of time in the open air throughout the year, so you must be prepared for all types of weather, and ready to adapt your plans to go with the weather of the day.
You will work closely with tenant farmers, volunteers and the local community; most of them speak Welsh, so the ability to communicate effectively in Welsh is essential for this role. We are proud of the part Welsh plays in the places and communities we care for across Wales. We recognise that everyone's language journey is different, so we will support you to continue developing your skills and confidence and to use Welsh as part of your everyday work at the National Trust.
What you'll be doing
The full profile for this job is available in the attached document. You do not need to possess all the information, skills and experience listed in the job profile; that list provides a full picture of what is possible in this job.
