Requirements

What we're looking for

Strong mechanical design engineering background within precision engineering, rotating equipment, heavy engineering or similar industries.
Proven experience taking technical ownership of complex engineering design projects.
Advanced 2D/3D CAD capability, ideally Solid Edge.
Strong understanding of GD&T, manufacturing processes, materials and mechanical design principles.
Degree, HND or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline.

Applicants must meet applicable security clearance and export control requirements.

The role

Lead Mechanical Design Engineer - Defence

Morson Edge is recruiting for a Lead Mechanical Design Engineer to join an established defence engineering business in Huddersfield.

This is an opportunity to take technical ownership of complex mechanical design projects, working on high-integrity gearboxes, geared transmission systems and precision-engineered assemblies for demanding defence applications.

You'll play a leading technical role within an established engineering team, contributing to specialist defence programmes involving complex mechanical systems and high-integrity engineering.

The position offers significant technical responsibility, challenging design work and the opportunity to influence engineering solutions from concept through to manufacture.

What you'll do

Lead mechanical design activities across gearbox and power transmission projects.
Develop new designs and re-engineer existing systems for specialist applications.
Produce and review detailed 3D CAD models, manufacturing drawings and technical documentation.
Provide technical guidance to design engineers and support engineering design reviews.
Oversee design calculations, tolerancing, materials selection and engineering change control.
Work closely with manufacturing, analysis, production engineering and supply chain teams.
Support gearbox testing, design verification, DFMEA and continuous improvement.
Ensure engineering deliverables meet customer specifications, quality standards and project deadlines.

Skills & Experience

Experience designing gearboxes, geared transmissions or mechanical power transmission systems would be highly advantageous.
Ability to review technical drawings, mentor engineers and coordinate multidisciplinary engineering activities.
