Job Introduction

Salary: £25,614 a year pro rata
Hours: 7.5 hours a week (term time only)
Contract type: Permanent

Please note this role does not attract sponsorship.

We have the following School Crossing Patrol positions available at these locations:

  • 6 hours and 40 minutes - Leagrave High Street / Pastures Way.

  • 7 hours and 30 minutes - Hitchin Road, outside Stopsley Primary School.

  • 7 hours and 30 minutes - Pastures Way, outside St Martin de Porres Primary School.

What You'll be doing

As a School Crossing Patrol, you'll help keep children, parents and other pedestrians safe when crossing the road at a designated crossing point. You'll ensure crossings are managed safely during set times, while being mindful of the safety of all road users.

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who communicates confidently with the public, particularly children of different ages, and can work independently using their own initiative while following procedures and keeping to set times. You'll need to be alert to potential hazards, take appropriate steps to keep everyone safe, and understand the importance of treating people fairly and recognising discrimination.

You'll need to be comfortable standing for long periods and moving briskly in and out of the road in all weather conditions, with good vision and hearing, with or without aids. The role also requires flexibility, including being willing to work at a different crossing location when needed (up to four times a year), and taking annual leave during school holidays only.

Application Process

Because of the nature of this job, it will be necessary for the appropriate level of criminal record disclosure to be undertaken. This post is exempt from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and therefore applicants are required to declare all unspent cautions and convictions; and also any adult cautions (simple or conditional), and spent convictions that are not protected as defined by the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 (Exceptions) Order 1975 (as amended in 2020). A person's criminal record will not in itself prevent a person from being appointed to this post. Applicants will not be refused posts because of offences which are not relevant to, and do not place them at or make them a risk in, the role for which they are applying. However in the event of the employment being taken up, any failure to disclose such offence, as detailed above, will result in dismissal or disciplinary action by the Authority.

Applicants for this public-facing post will need to demonstrate the ability to converse, and provide effective help or advice, fluently in spoken English

On occasions, we may close a vacancy early due to a very high number of applications being received.
