The role
About the role
The role will be based within the Department of Computing's Computing Support Group (CSG), contributing to the delivery and maintenance of reliable, secure and effective computing services across the Department. Working within a highly collaborative and multidisciplinary environment, the post holder will support a diverse technical infrastructure comprising Linux and Windows servers and workstations, Mac workstations, and an increasing range of virtualised services. The role will involve working closely with systems administrators, developers and user support professionals to ensure that systems and services remain resilient, efficient and responsive to the needs of staff and students.
As part of the CSG, the post holder will have the opportunity to contribute to the development of innovative technical solutions while supporting the Department's commitment to excellence in computing. The role requires a collaborative approach, strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work effectively across different areas of IT. By helping to maintain and improve the Department's infrastructure and services, the post holder will play an important role in supporting the Department's teaching, research and day-to-day operations, while contributing to an environment that values innovation, continuous improvement and multidisciplinary working.
What you would be doing
In this role, you would be responsible for providing reliable, secure and high-performing Linux computing services to support the Department's teaching, research and administrative activities. You would work on maintaining and improving departmental infrastructure, with a focus on automation, scalability, performance and resilience. This would include systems administration, monitoring, patching, access control, backups and vulnerability management, as well as contributing to the development of new services and infrastructure solutions. You would also work closely with academic staff, researchers, teaching fellows and technical colleagues to understand their requirements and provide effective systems, network and user support.
A key part of the role would be supporting students and teaching activities across undergraduate, postgraduate and PhD programmes. You would help maintain teaching laboratories, development environments, research computing resources and systems used for student projects, ensuring that these services are accessible, secure and fit for purpose. You would also collaborate with College ICT teams and other technical groups to deliver and support shared services and infrastructure. In addition, you would provide technical advice to the CSG Manager, identifying opportunities to improve existing services, automate processes and introduce new technologies that respond to changing teaching, research and administrative needs.
You would also contribute to the wider management and development of the Department's IT services. This would include providing technical input into the procurement, evaluation, installation, configuration and lifecycle management of hardware, software and infrastructure, while maintaining accurate asset and purchasing records. An important responsibility would be ensuring that departmental systems follow appropriate information security, data management and IT policies. Where security or operational incidents occur, you would be involved in detecting, investigating, escalating and resolving issues promptly, as well as identifying preventative measures to reduce the likelihood of similar incidents occurring in the future.
What we are looking for

Experience with virtualisation, cloud services, systems programming, application development or student information systems would be desirable. You should have strong interpersonal, organisational and analytical skills, with the ability to communicate clearly with staff and students, manage multiple priorities effectively and work collaboratively as part of a team. A proactive approach to learning new technologies, diagnosing and resolving technical issues, improving services and maintaining high quality standards is essential, alongside a commitment to continuous improvement and providing a positive and effective service to users.
