The role

Job overview

Do you have any experience in caring for children with Endocrine or Metabolic conditions or is this something you would be interested in us supporting you to explore?

An exciting opportunity has arisen for qualified Band 5 paediatric nurses to join our friendly and welcoming team on Alligator Endocrine and Metabolic Ward. We are looking for nurses who seek to deliver high quality care to children and young people.

Alligator Endo/Met Ward is a busy area with 6 beds, specialising in endocrinology and metabolic medicine. The patients are often very highly dependent, requiring frequent blood sampling and complex intravenous infusions. We would help you develop and improve your high dependency skills within the speciality. We care for a variety of children and young people with complex healthcare needs requiring both long and short term admissions. We care for a diverse age range of patients from newborn to 18 years, but the main age group would be neonates to toddlers. Some of the conditions are incredibly rare and interesting and you would learn lots of specialist and transferable skills.

We would consider appointing an adult nurse into position if you had relevant experience and utilise your previous nursing skills with our paediatric population.

Main duties of the job

  • To provide the highest standard of nursing care for the children, young people and their families at all times
  • To plan, assess, implement and evaluate programmes of care for individual children and to supervise other staff in this activity
  • To ensure an ongoing welcoming, caring and safe environment is provided for the children, young people and their families
  • To supervise and support members of the ward team as required, ensuring that all patients receive appropriate care
  • To ensure that treatments prescribed by the medical staff are carried out, and that multidisciplinary team members are informed of changes in the patient's condition
  • To participate in informal and formal teaching
  • To supervise and orientate learners and new staff.
  • To maintain confidentiality surrounding the child's or young person's admission and treatment at all times.

Working for our organisation

We are committed to recruiting the best person for the job through a fair, open and consistent process that is free from bias and discrimination.

We are working towards becoming an anti-racist organisation. This means creating a workplace where every colleague feels seen, heard and valued, and where racism in any form has no place. Our anti-racism commitment is backed by action through our Anti-Racism Statement and action plan, developed in collaboration with our REACH staff network.

We actively challenge discrimination, dismantle barriers and embed equity across all aspects of our workforce, including recruitment, progression and development. All applicants will receive equal consideration regardless of race, ethnicity, nationality, religion or belief, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, disability, health condition or employment history.

We particularly welcome applications from ethnically diverse communities, people with disabilities or long-term health conditions, and LGBTQ+ community members. We are proud to be a Disability Confident Employer, a member of the Business Disability Forum, and a Stonewall Diversity Champion.

Our staff networks, including REACH, PRIDE, ENABLED and Women's Networks, are active and executive supported. These employee-led networks play a vital role in shaping an inclusive culture at GOSH and are open to all colleagues.

Together, we are building a culture where inclusion is not optional - it is essential.
