The role

The City of London Corporation is a diverse organisation. It provides local authority services within the Square Mile, has its own police force and is also a port health authority. It provides services to London and the nation as a whole, and is committed to the support of the City as a pre-eminent international financial and business centre and as a pleasant and vibrant place to work, live and relax.

As well as offering the normal range of local government services, the City of London Corporation manages and funds a number of world-renowned educational and cultural institutions, owns and manages some of London's most important open spaces, including Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest, and is the charity trustee of Bridge House Estates (known as City Bridge Foundation) and other charities.

An exciting opportunity has arisen in the Public and Corporate Law Division of the Comptroller & City Solicitor's Department. The work of the Division is very varied, providing advice across the breadth of the City of London Corporation's activities and functions. Our work includes advising on local government law, administrative and constitutional law, planning and highways law, charities and trust law, company law, information law, electoral law and the law relating to open spaces.

The advertised role will be predominantly focussed on complex property research and advice relating to Bridge House Estates and 10 Open Spaces charities in and around London, including Hampstead Heath and Epping Forest. Bridge House Estates is an ancient charity whose primary object is the maintenance and support of five Thames Bridges (London, Blackfriars, Southwark, Tower, Millennium Bridges). The charity has a varied portfolio of operational and investment property with a complex acquisition history. The post-holder will be responsible for maintaining and updating property acquisition and title records for Bridge House Estates, as well as providing advice on an ad hoc basis in respect of individual properties and property issues for the Corporation which may involve in-depth research and analysis of varied historic and modern property and constitutional records, including statute. The post-holder will work closely with the Property Law Division within the Department, and with client Departments including City Bridge Foundation and the City Surveyor's Department.

The successful applicant will be a qualified Barrister, Solicitor or Legal Executive with a minimum of 7 years post-qualification experience in property law with an understanding of charities. The post requires computer literacy, excellent research and communication skills and the ability to provide clear and pragmatic advice at pace.

Salary: £70,680 - £80,100 inclusive of all allowances. In addition, this post also attracts a Market Forces Supplement of up to £11,281 per annum. The Market Forces Supplement is discretionary and may be withdrawn, reduced or increased during the future.

Appointment will be made on the basis of experience, skills and abilities demonstrated in relevant fields.
