Ceres Power is a global leader in solid oxide technology, driving the clean energy revolution. Our steel-supported fuel cell and electrolyser technology gives partners a decade of development advantage-accelerating innovation in power generation, green hydrogen, and distributed power solutions for data centre's. Trusted by some of the world's most progressive companies, our proven designs deliver efficient, low-cost solutions backed by over 5 million test hours. At Ceres, innovation is in our DNA. Join us and be part of a world-class team making a positive impact on the planet.
As a Senior Electrochemist at Ceres, you will serve as the technical authority for electrochemistry and Electrical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS), helping to advance the scientific understanding and development of our industry-leading solid oxide technology across button cells, short stacks and full stack systems. Operating at the intersection of cutting-edge science and engineering, you will drive the development and application of best-practice approaches to experimental design, impedance measurement, data quality and uncertainty assessment, equivalent-circuit and physics-based interpretation, and mechanistic analysis, enabling deeper insights into complex material, cell and system-level behaviour.
Working closely with multidisciplinary teams of scientists, engineers and technicians, you will play a key role in shaping technical strategy by identifying critical knowledge gaps, defining high-value experimental programmes and leading the interpretation of complex electrochemical datasets. You will apply expert judgement to distinguish physical mechanisms from artefacts and other confounding factors, generating robust, scientifically defensible conclusions that inform technology and product development. The role will lead investigations into degradation, performance limitations, material behaviour and anomalous results, integrating impedance data with complementary electrical, materials and performance evidence, while challenging assumptions and connecting findings across multiple scales of development.
A significant aspect of the role will involve transforming complex electrochemical evidence into clear technical recommendations that influence future technology direction and product performance. You will develop advanced analytical methods, models and tools that improve the consistency, depth and scalability of electrochemical interpretation across the organisation, while providing expert review and constructive challenge to test strategies, analytical methodologies, technical reports and model assumptions to ensure the highest standards of scientific rigour.
As a recognised subject matter expert, you will communicate complex electrochemical principles, results and implications effectively to both specialist and non-specialist audiences, including customers and external technical partners where required. You will also play a central role in developing organisational capability through mentoring, technical coaching, knowledge sharing and the creation of authoritative guidance for electrochemical and impedance analysis. While the primary focus of the role is on technical leadership, expert analysis, method development and capability building, you may also support test coordination, routine equipment operation and associated laboratory or operational activities where required.
Knowledge and skills required for the role
· Deep knowledge of electrochemical principles and their application to high-temperature electrochemical devices, materials and interfaces
· Advanced expertise in electrical impedance spectroscopy, including measurement configuration, frequency-domain behaviour, equivalent-circuit analysis, distribution of relaxation times and interpretation of non-ideal response
· Strong understanding of electrical measurement principles, instrumentation limits, grounding, shielding, noise, parasitic effects and methods for distinguishing artefacts from genuine electrochemical behaviour
· Proven ability to develop hypotheses, design discriminating experiments and combine multiple evidence sources to resolve complex or ambiguous technical problems
· Experience analysing and modelling electrochemical data using appropriate scientific software; capability in Python or comparable analytical tools is desirable
· Ability to assess measurement quality, repeatability, uncertainty and validity, and to establish technically justified standards for data interpretation
· A track record of technical leadership, peer review and influencing decisions through clear scientific reasoning rather than formal authority
· Excellent written and verbal communication, with the ability to explain complex electrochemical concepts and their practical implications to varied audiences
· Sufficient familiarity with laboratory safety and test systems to provide technically informed guidance and work effectively with operational specialists, without routine coordination or equipment ownership being a primary responsibility
