The role

HS2 has appointed Ferrovial Construction / BAM Nuttall JV (FBJV) for contracts totalling almost 140 miles of track between London and the West Midlands. Ferrovial BAM will oversee the design and construction of the HS2 track infrastructure, manage construction logistics and support the testing and commissioning phase.

High-speed rail is the worldwide standard for long-distance, inter-city travel. Britain is now investing in high-speed rail to create space on overcrowded networks and to enable large numbers of people to move efficiently. This requires a new network, High Speed Two, which will take long-distance travellers onto new high-speed trains with fewer stops, enabling them to make their journeys more quickly.

HS2 Ltd is the company responsible for developing and promoting High Speed Two and is wholly owned by the Department for Transport. It is the biggest transport project undertaken in the UK for a generation.

The Railheads & Track Installation Construction Manager will be responsible for the overall management and coordination of construction delivery activities for the assigned section of Lot 3, ensuring safe, efficient and compliant execution of railhead infrastructure, track installation, logistics interfaces and associated civil works.

The role will lead Agents, Section Engineers, construction teams and subcontractors, translating project objectives into executable delivery plans while supporting the Project Manager in achieving programme, cost, quality and safety targets.

What you'll do

  • Lead and manage Agent-level delivery teams.
  • Coordinate multiple work fronts and construction disciplines.
  • Drive short-term and medium-term production planning.
  • Monitor productivity and implement improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure readiness of labour, plant, materials and access arrangements.
  • Support project-wide construction strategy and delivery objectives.
  • Own construction delivery against the approved programme.
  • Lead look-ahead planning and resource planning.
  • Coordinate recovery plans for delayed activities.
  • Review productivity performance and resource forecasts.
  • Manage construction risks and constraints.
  • Support the Project Manager and Commercial Manager in achieving project financial objectives.
  • Review subcontractor performance and progress.
  • Identify change, compensation event and early warning opportunities.
  • Maintain records supporting commercial and contractual matters.
  • Review construction impacts associated with design changes and instructed variations.
  • Participate in cost reviews and forecasting exercises.
  • Lead day-to-day interface management between railheads, logistics, track installation and adjacent contractors.
  • Chair delivery coordination meetings.
  • Manage construction interfaces with designers, civil contractors and systems contractors.
  • Escalate significant issues to the Project Manager.
  • Manage subcontractors and suppliers delivering railhead and track construction works.
  • Coordinate material deliveries including rail, slab track components, S&C units and associated infrastructure.
  • Ensure construction logistics are aligned with planned installation activities.
  • Directly manage Agents, Section Engineers and site management teams.
  • Establish clear responsibilities and delivery objectives.
  • Support recruitment, onboarding and development of construction personnel.
  • Promote collaborative working across project functions.
  • Provide coaching and mentoring to junior delivery managers.
  • Provide visible leadership across all construction activities.
  • Monitor safety performance trends and implement corrective actions.
  • Lead significant incident investigations and lessons learned activities where required.
  • Ensure compliance with HS2 and FBJV delivery standards.
  • Ensure works are delivered in accordance with approved designs and specifications.
  • Support inspection and testing activities.
  • Coordinate completion documentation, as-built records and handover requirements.
  • Support testing and commissioning activities for track systems.
